Type A\B FAs and Former Buccos

Stay connected for news and updates

The current FO has made the most of recent drafts. It's clear that a good chunk of money is being spent on the draft and have helped reshape the Pirates minor league system.  What I was wondering is with the Pirates recent dedication to the draft, may it have been better to let some of our former Buccos walk and sign somewhere else so that we could obtain a compenstory pick rather than get flamed out prospects hoping to regain their shine?

Granted, I know little about what it takes to gain Type A or B FA status.  So that is why I am wondering, would it have been better to let a guy like Jason Bay or Zach Duke leave instead?  Of course, without making some of the deals we did, we would not have players like Bryan Morris in our system, but what could have happened if we instead got a sandwich pick in the draft knowing that we are spending enough in the draft to sign such a pick?  I guess what I am asking is, who are some former Pirates that have gained this type of FA status and would we have been better off with this approach?
