I wish I'd written this myself. This pretty much nails it. It's going to be extremely hard for the Pirates to replace Paul Maholm and Ryan Doumit, such that even if they upgrade at other positions, it's going to be hard for them to get better. We've still got the entire offseason ahead of us, and much can still happen, but as I've pointed out elsewhere, the Pirates don't usually do a good job improving their team in the offseason, because the market doesn't favor them. If they're unwilling to pick up a reasonably-priced, one-year option on Paul Maholm, I don't understand how they're going to replace him in free agency. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe Maholm's injury is more serious than has been reported, but the way this offseason is beginning concerns me greatly.
