Law on Grossman/Marte
"Steve (boston)
who do you like better between Robbie Grossman and starling marte?
Klaw (2:03 PM)
Grossman. That's not really close."
I assume this is a slam on Marte, more than a great endorsement of Grossman...although he did give Grossman the compliment of saying his ceiling was "above-avg ML starter" earlier in the chat.

I think Law is not too keen on
Marte bb/k splits. Even a novice can realize that Marte needs better plate discipline to also be an “above-average ML starter”
sure
But Marte’s ceiling is clearly “above-average ML starter,” which is what KLaw says about Grossman. Grossman too (presumably) has things he needs to work on to reach his ceiling. I wish KLaw would have elaborated here, because I don’t really understand this position prima facie.
Ya
Not close because he likes Grossman more? I have had a hard time keeping every expert’s opinion straight, but I feel like Marte is consensus better prospect because of his tools.

I guess Law must have really liked what he saw in the Arizona fall league
Which, when combined with Grossman’s statistics, made him shoot up his prospect list
It is well documented that Law doesn't/hasn't liked Marte
I have asked him about that in the past and he seems to believe that the BB% is the end-all be-all when it comes to Marte in his eyes. I mentioned that he normally loves guys with lots of tools, but got no real reason why Marte was an exception.
And, my mind may be failing me here, but, I seem to recall reading something he posted about Grossman earlier in the year (during the regular season) basically stating that he would not be a ML player. Said he was a tweener that didn’t have the tools to succeed.
Probably my biggest qualm with Law as a whole is that he is not consistent with his analysis of guys and seems to flip flop on a whim…then berates you with his snark (which I love) when you try to call him on it.
I am, and have been, high on Grossman for a while now. But I won’t go off my rocker with excitement by a few shiny words about him from Law.
It was Jim Callis who called Grossman a tweener

KLaw
I take KLaw with a grain of salt anymore. When Brad Lincoln was drafted KLaw loved him, so did I, but hindsight is 20/20. As WTM says every one is entiled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.
We will have to wait and see on Marte, my opinion is that he becomes something slightly below a star caliber player. Stay tuned.
Law's been reading what I've been saying about Grossman for a long time here.
I said Grossman’s going to be a good, so that’s the way it is. I’ve never been as keen as many here on Marte, so Law is following what I’ve had to say.

not that much more
IIRC he was sniping about the extension, and he definitely thinks Tabata is older than his listed age. (And no, he doesn’t have any evidence beyond his eyes, and I don’t think he’s ever addressed the difference between Venezuela and the DR as far as age-faking goes.)

I like Tabata, but wish he would stop hitting so many ground balls. He was the only NL player with a GB% above 60 percent.
Not shabby at all. If the Pirates had a couple 35-homer guys in the lineup, i’d be more apt to accept a LF with no SLG. Absent any mashers, however, the Pirates must get at least some power from a lot of positions. Tabata could be our Jon Jay, but it works better when there’s a Pujols, Berkman and Holliday to drive him in.
if alvarez becomes a bomber, then that might be all that we need.
let me rephrase this: we need guys that can hit around 300 with some gap power. we get the speedsters on base and have the “quality” hitters drive them in. Pedro should be kept a little low in the lineup for icing on the cake.
example: james loney. away from dodger stadium, hes a very very good hitter.
he has gap power, doesnt have bad K numbers, and his OPS is very nice.
put him behind the speedsters and his good bat control would pay off nicely.
