So, MLBTR says Rockies' beat writer Troy E. Renck thinks Colorado will look at trading for a third baseman this off season. Their main target is David Wright, but he also lists Chase Headley and Pedro Alvarez as other plan B targets. Thoughts?

i say nay... for now

i like Harrison as a super utility and not an everyday starter. Pedro needs another shot to show he can hang with the Bucs.

but if Pedro WERE dealt to the Rox, whom would come back in that deal?

by white angus on Oct 5, 2011 12:54 PM EDT reply actions

That to me is the real question. Can the Rockies make us a deal we can’t refuse?

by Brakeman8 on Oct 5, 2011 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

alvarez for pomeranz straight up?

do you do that deal? ask for ianetta too?

there’s no way we can sell low on alvarez. just absolutely no effing way. to me, colorado would have to throw basically full value at us in order to make something happen.

by johnnycuff on Oct 5, 2011 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

You don’t trade him based on his MLB stats, you have to trade him on his potential.

there’s no way we can sell low on alvarez.

Only if you think his value is going to go up.If not, you do.

by BurgherKing on Oct 5, 2011 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

The Pirates aren't getting Pomeranz.

They might get Ianetta or even Rosario. There’s also a glut of OF (MLB Smith, Prospect Wheeler) or a prospect arm (Maybe Bettis).

That’s what you would have to work with, but not all of that either.

Alvarez would most likely be a last option move unless the price was very low.

no freaking way

this would be a super dumb move. we will never get equal value for Pedro after this past year. he WILL rebound and he WILL be an above average ML player based solely on my opinion haha

After years of can’t miss-prospect Ian Stewart, I can’t imagine the Rockies would target Pedro Alvarez. I would bet they want a safer, less strikeout-prone alternative.

i imagine they are considering Pedro

as someone they can get cheaply. If not, I expect they’ll look elsewhere…

i doubt we trade pedro alvarez

1. Just because he struggled this year doesn’t mean he won’t get his act together next year.
2. We have no power 3B aside from Alvarez and that’s what you’re looking for. Granted we haven’t seen that power yet, but when he adjusts to the MLB pitching and gets it together those HR shots should be majestic.
3. We have Alvarez under control for a long period of time right now
4. I’m sure a trade would have to consist 3-4 major league ready players that could really help the pirates along with cash considering the bonus we paid Alvarez. Something that might be really a turn off for Colorado.
5. The Fans would really turn on the PBC and the Front Office.
6. I’ve seen this trade before in the past (granted it was basically to send money away) but need I remind you of Aramis Ramirez

You should always sell as low as possible on recent top draft picks! Always!

Trade him for Kouzmanoff, cash, and a one year subscription to Sports Illustrated.

there's no way I'd trade Pedro Alvarez yet

The Pirates gave Andy Laroche 1044 plate appearances, while Pedro has only had 648 plate appearances to prove himself. I’d give him one more year at least.

/signed

one year. if he doesnt have his head out of his fourth point of contact by the end of next season, deal him.

but i wouldnt be suprised to see another joey batts happen if he was delt.

If they trade Pedro

and sign Casey Blake and platoon him with Harrison it won’t be good for attendance. Just my opinion.

I’m a Huntington guy, and I think I make that pretty obvious.

However, trading Pedro now, unless the deal is AMAZING, would end all support I give him.

Thank you Ned Colletti.

Can we trade for David Wright and then trade Pedro?

It’d probably too early to cut bait, but if Neal did… he for damn sure better get it right. Pedro might hit 50 HR a year in that thin air, that wouldn’t look good for us.

Considering

the mood on this thread is tense (not “The sky is falling” though… yet) I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that this is completely from the Rockies side. Even the language from the Rockies side, “to cast a wide net” speaks to how unlikely a “Pedro to the Rockies” trade is. Plus, it says nothing about the intentions of the Pirates.

My inclination and belief would be there is zero intention of even entertaining a trade. This is why (and I don’t mean this disrespectfully) the site is called mlbtraderumors. I’d go as far as to say this isn’t even a “where’s there’s smoke there’s fire” situation. If you ask me, the smoke is just a mirage and there is no fire, not even a spark.

dude

it’s the MLB playoffs a.k.a. the offseason for pirates fans. of course this isn’t likely to happen. what else would you like to talk about?

by johnnycuff on Oct 5, 2011 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm

fine with talking about it. Just don’t want people jumping off bridges or anything.
