A few minutes ago Jennifer Langosch announced that the Pirates have signed veteran catcher Rod Barajas. The Pirates reportedly signed a one-year deal with him with a club-option for 2013. Not sure for how much yet. Rod Barajas is going into his 14th season and is 36 years old. He is a lifetime, .238 hitter with 125 career dingers. However, its clear that his best days are behind him.
It think this a Benito Santiago signing and hope they didn't sign him for much. Personally I like the Fort better and think he has more upside and can bring to the table everything Barajas has at this age and a little more. Sure Barajas is a nice insurance policy but I think if this is all the Pirates are doing to address their catching situation, I'm content just sticking with McKenry and seeing what he can do in his second year.
Thoughts?
