Morosi: Pirates interested in Ramon Santiago
QnD info on the switch-hitting Santiago, who turned 32 at the end of August:
Has alternated between SS & 2B for the Tigers. Playing primarily at second in 2011, he put up a 10.4 UZR/150 in 195 innings at short. In 2010, he played primarily at SS (617 innings) and was good for a 16.1 UZR/150.
Last season at the plate he hit .260/.311/.384 with 5 HR.
No info in the report as to the amount of money/years Santiago might be looking for. He made $1.35MM last year in the second season of a two year/$2.5MM deal.

Cedeno
b-ref comps don’t include defensive measures IIRC. santiago has historically been a better defender at SS than ronny. he also might be had for less than $2.8M.
okay, but cedeno has improved defensively over the last 2 years
but yes, santiago might be had for less simply because he hasnt been a full time starter in 8 years
Watch for it
It’ll either be 2 years or a 1 year/1 option deal that’ll come to 2.8-3 million total.
Jose Tabata is the truth
The following is a list of everything Darren McFadden is bad at: 1) Giving birth. End of list.
And he will be an improvement over Ronny...
Barajas will also improve the catching position. They may only be incremental improvements but both shortstop and catcher were major weaknesses for us last year. Now they will be lesser weaknesses who are cheaper. Beats resigning Cedeno and Doumit for 10 million.
Santiago
Honestly, I’m fine with this. Offense is nothing to get excited over, defense is pretty good. Sounds like your typical ML SS. We’re not signing Troy Tulowitzki this offseason, so getting an average guy is fine, as long as the price is right.
