Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

Ian Stewart

Rival teams say the Rockies would like a Double-A or Triple-A pitcher for Ian Stewart. I think that the pirates should get Stewart to split time with Pedro Alvarez and maybe get Pedro to start hitting better. Also they can get Stewart to become better and maybe have a good thing going with this. Stewart is a good player if you can get him going and give him time to adjust and he could be dangerous. This I think would be a good thing to do. What do you think about getting Ian Stewart and platooning him with Pedro or a plan B if Pedro is not doing good in the start of the season?

In general terms, I like Stewart as a potential pickup, though as with any deal, it depends on the price. Which pitcher would the Rockies want, etc.

As in a McPherson or Owens, or as in an Alderson or Colla? Because if it’s the latter, I’d absolutely do it.

probably give up Owens at this point for Stewart.

Heh.

Yeah, I’d be pretty reluctant to give up a real prospect for him, even a Wilson-type guy. And I kinda doubt that the Rockies will move Stewart for filler. If they do, though, I sure hope it’s to us.

Man I just got bummed out thinking about Owens' 2011 season

Back to back seasons with 25 starts, an ERA under 2.5, about 8 K/9 and about 6:1 strikeout to walk ratios at age appropriate levels. I know numbers aren’t everything but to go from that to this crappy season is a bummer. Lame.

by KentuckyPirate on Nov 30, 2011 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

That’s the danger of finesse pitchers. You need to see how they handle the adjustment against advanced competition before you pencil them into the rotation.

Struggling last year may make him a better pitcher in the long run, if he’s able to address some of the weak spots in his game.

by Vlad on Dec 1, 2011 9:23 AM EST up reply actions

This.

I realistically expect a good bounce-back year from him.

Has anyone...

actually looked at Stewart’s major league stats? Please note that on the SBNation Ian Stewart page, his 2011 numbers are actually those he had at Colorado Springs, not the Rockies.

His HIGHEST major league batting average is .259, which occurred in 2008. His 2011 Rockies major league numbers make Pedro’s look like an All Star.

by Thunder on Dec 1, 2011 12:22 AM EST reply actions

Use BB-Ref or Fangraphs for his actual major league numbers.

Yeah, I sort of think that we’ve spent enough time on reclamation projects. I wouldn’t want the FO to do this unless they see something specific that they can fix.

Meh

on Stewart, I’d give up very little at this point. Owens or Wilson is too much at this point. Perhaps cash considerations, ha ha. I do like Stewart but at most he is a platoon guy. I’d move someone like Alderson, maybe Lorin. But nothing more than that.

by BSpar on Dec 1, 2011 8:37 AM EST reply actions

which means Stewart stays a Rockie

“hey mr rockie GM guy, i see you no longer want Stewart. I have some lower level stuff i dont need, that should be enough for a guy who can be a servicable major leaguer”

by white angus on Dec 1, 2011 9:04 AM EST up reply actions

Not really

If he doesn’t fit the Colorado MLB roster, they may just be looking to move him for a young arm so as not to just drop him for nothing.

Obviously the chances of getting Stewart and what the Bucs are willing to give up to get him probably depend a lot on what Hurdle thinks about him.

by Brakeman8 on Dec 1, 2011 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

love I Stew

I think he can play some 1B pretty well also. If we did something like acquire him and start Pedro in AAA this year i wouldn’t hate it. One thing about him is i don’t think any of his numbers would be inflated by Coors because he’s got dad power. Great type of player to take a chance on, he’s a pretty cool dude too

you guys have never heard of the concept of dad strength? how strong is your dad? I’m a big hairy american 25 year old winning machine but my dad would arm wrestle my hand through the table if we were to tango.

Was just joking but Ian Stewart has POWER, he doesnt get many cheapies at Coors is all i meant. he won’t struggle to hit bombs at PNC

Hasn’t the Coors hitting paradise taken a dive over the past few years since they started using the humidor for the balls or whatever? It doesn’t seem to be the easy HR park it was when it opened.

man that's one serious little dude

but surely you can’t be serious? Ian Stewart? He’s horrible.

by pineapplepete on Dec 1, 2011 12:45 PM EST reply actions

No, he's not.

Over the last three years, he’s got an 87 OPS+, which is below-average for a starter but not bad for a reserve, and he can play third and both outfield corners and fake it at second if needed. There’s also some amount of upside, in that he’s still fairly young, and could very well rebound to his 2008-2010 level of offense.

by Vlad on Dec 1, 2011 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

if we're trying to get him for the Brandon Wood/Josh Harrison role I'd be cool with that

he hit .156 last year

with 0 hrs 6 rbi at Coors. Would you trade for Adam Dunn right now, or go by his numbers over the last three years?

by pineapplepete on Dec 1, 2011 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

he hit .156 last year

with 0 hrs 6 rbi at Coors

In 122 at-bats of sporadic playing time. Anybody can put up any kind of batting line in 100 AB. Just look at Keith Osik’s .293/.361/.429 in 1996, or John Wehner’s .340/.381/.406 in 1991. The sample just isn’t large enough to have any real predictive value.

Oh, and because it’s obligatory: RBI are virtually worthless as a measure of individual hitting ability.

Would you trade for Adam Dunn right now…

Dunn is five years older than Stewart, Dunn’s lousy 2011 line came in almost four times as much playing time as Stewart’s, and unlike Dunn, Stewart isn’t due $44M over the next three years. The two aren’t even remotely comparable.

by Vlad on Dec 2, 2011 9:33 AM EST up reply actions

122 at bats of sporadic playing time?

Yeah he got sporadic playing time because he got sent to the minors. He’s horrible!

by pineapplepete on Dec 2, 2011 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

Vlad is the new eternal optimist!

He says Stewart is still young, therefore, he may very well return to his 2008-2010 level of offense! What exactly do you base this on other than a hope or a prayer? Admit it, you don’t know the first thing about why Stewart bombed last season. So now your willing to give up a pitching prospect and pay Stewart over 2 million in hopes he finds himself? The Bucs need offense, not a wish list.

Stewart has a pretty good glove at 3b, but the bat has really stalled. I think he got into some bad habits in Triple-A/early MLB career by trying to hit 50 home runs, and then he altered his approach when that failed. Now he’s just messed up. I wouldn’t give up a real prospect for him, and I doubt the Rockies would demand one. I still believe a much better target would be Blake Dewitt.

The problem with Vlad

Because he is an editor he therefore refuses to EVER admit he is wrong about anything. Come on Ian Stewart? The Bucs finished just about last in every offensive catergory and we are going to trade a pitching prospect for a pure gamble. I don’t mind taking a gamble on a free agent but trading away any prospect for Stewart is just incredibly stupid.

The value of picking up Ian Stewart

is in how much the Bucs are planning to play Ian Stewart. Is he a one-start-a-week guy if Pedro stays healthy/productive? Does he become that corner IF/corner OF guy who plays 4 times a week in different spots? Is he insurance in case Pedro falls apart/gets hurt/can’t put it together? I don’t mind the organization losing an arm that doesn’t really project into their future for some insurance; the Bucs would have been a better team if they’d had an actual MLB 3B instead of the 700+ PA’s wasted on Petey, Wood, and Harrison last year.

I’m leary of costing Alvarez development, though. I think Hurdle (along with the rest of the organization) should have a very long leash on him since there is already so much invested. Nothing could be worse than the crap-bag of 3B that was the 2011 Pirates, unless Alvarez slumps early and gets sent down by May and we still don’t find out if he’s going to be any good.

by SuperBaes on Dec 5, 2011 12:11 AM EST reply actions

The only thing that is the least bit attractive about Stewart is that he hits some HRs. And playing in Colorado brings that into question. Calling him a MLB 3B is a bit of a stretch. There IS a reason he spent half the 2011 season in Colorado Springs. When Jose Lopez, Kevin Kouzmanoff and Ty Wigginton are taking playing time away from you, you aren’t very good.

by Thunder on Dec 5, 2011 2:40 AM EST up reply actions

And playing in Colorado brings that into question.

It shouldn’t. Stewart has legit power – he was hitting bombs 400+ in pre-draft workouts out of high school.

Calling him a MLB 3B is a bit of a stretch.

He’s not a Gold Glover or anything, but I’d take him over Pedro at third any day of the week.

Now, 2B, that’s another story entirely…

When Jose Lopez, Kevin Kouzmanoff and Ty Wigginton are taking playing time away from you, you aren’t very good.

Or you play for Jim Tracy, who’s well-known for his inabilty to identify and start the best talent on his rosters.
