Gerrit Cole To Start In AFL Rising Stars Game Tonight
Gerrit Cole, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft, will start against Danny Hultzen, the No. 2 overall pick, in the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars game at 8:10 PM Eastern tonight. Also, Robbie Grossman will lead off for the East. Bryce Harper will bat fifth.
UPDATE: Cole gave up five runs and two home runs (to Nick Franklin and Joe Terdoslavich) while striking out one and walking one over two-thirds of an inning. He did, however, show excellent velocity.

I'll be checking out at least the first few innings of this, maybe until they pull Cole
Fortunately I don’t care at all about college football, so that won’t interfere. Although I’m sure I’ll switch channels during commercials.
The MLB Network
will be replaying this game at 1am Monday, for anyone wanting to record.
Will not miss Cole pitch
It is great to DVR football, can catch up so fast… Wish Harper was on the other side so Cole would face him.
yeah he looked real tough
hes so smooth. doesnt strike me as a guy that does too much in his delivery. looks like he doesnt even try to throw hard

damn
what a poor performance. But you have to believe he was nervous, with thia being his first game as a pirate with a national audience

good news
Poor performance by Cole, but the stuff was ridiculous. I wasn’t really prepared for just how good the slider and changeup are. Hopefully he can improve his command, because the stuff has “ace” written all over it.
Didn't expect that...
Ok Cole…this is the one bad outing you’re allowed in the Bucs organization…EVER!
You win some, you lose some.
Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?

Any thoughts on why he got hit hard?
I watched the inning… he didn’t have the best location, but the home run balls were low and down the middle. I think the second was a curve that just kinda hung over the lower part of the zone.
Both HR were on upper-90s fastballs. To me, the fastball looked a little straight and the command was very poor. That’s a bad combination, even at 99 MPH (maybe even especially at 99). No one really touched his secondaries, though. And other than the two HR, he didn’t get knocked around too badly. A few groundballs, only one of which (Mattison’s) was hit hard, and a walk isn’t too terrible. The biggest issue was the command, which is what people have been saying about Cole since last spring. Hopefully he can improve in that area.
seem to not have much command of anything tonight
Probably overthrowing/pressing. It happens.
cole's change up looked nice though
same release point and motion as his fastball.
wind was blowing out couldnt have helped either. AFL games are almost always high scoring affairs.
IMO, its good to get a bad start out of the way, especially on a national stage. this way the SMART fans will be tempered by their expectations. the NOT SO SMART fans are going to bitch no matter what.
yeah
anyone that even slightly judges him based on these 2/3 of an inning in an all star game are ridiculous.
