Jonathan Sanchez to KC - Melky to SF
KC trades Melky Cabrera to the Giants for Sanchez and Double-A pitcher Ryan Verdugo. I'm not sure Melky didn't have one of Garrett Jones' years, but who knows. Maybe Sanchez's left arm will fall off. Seems like a deal that the Pirates could have made with all their surplus center fielders. Gotta think KC got the better end of the deal on this one.

Presley and AA/A+ pitcher? Im really curious as to what the Giants were after on this one. As the OP says, this seems like a deal we could have won on.
Thats what she said! - Michael Gary Scott
We didn't have the proven vet to trade
but I’m sure we coulda got Melky for cheaper and then flipped him
I like it for both sides.
SFG is tired of waiting on Sanchez to try and put things together. They have easily 3 better starters, arguably 4. They also had one of the shittiest offenses in MLB last year. A competent offense wins that division, and probably pretty easily.
On the flip side, the Royals had awful pitching and seem to have a ton of young hitting to be able to sacrafice a guy like Melky for a risk like Sanchez.
From a Pirates perspective, I just don’t see us having anything SFG would’ve wanted. I bet they’d have jumped at Tabata, but they almost certainly would’ve had to throw in a good prospect or two. Most teams are probably skeptical of Presley at this point. If he puts up a full season of what he did last year though, we’ll either get a gorgeous return on him, or we’ll have a surprisingly good player.
Also, a full year (or even most of a full year) of watching Presley, Tabata, and Marte can give us a better idea of what to do with Cutch. Obviously, he’s the face of the team, so you want to extend him. However, if a guy just doesn’t want to sign, at some point you have to accept that. Perhaps a full year of solid development from those three makes moving him a bit easier.
If we ever have a year where Tabata, Presley and Marte start most of the games,
we might just do ourselves a favor and apply for the American Association prior to the season’s start.

If Cabrera keeps his weight down and stays in shape, he can play a bit.
If he reverts to his more rotund form of latter Yankee and Brave days, he’ll suck.
Nothing difficult to figure out here.

Seems like a wash to me
They’re both averageish players if things go well, lack upside and both have one year left before free agency.
Not really that big of a deal, IMO. There’s a pretty decent chance that neither one of them posts 2 WAR in 2012.
lack upside
Can’t really see that when applied to Sanchez, sorry.
There’s a pretty decent chance that neither one of them posts 2 WAR in 2012.
In Sanchez’s four seasons in the Giants’ rotation, he’s beaten 2 (Fangraphs) WAR in two of them and put up a 1.9 in a third.
Sanchez is 29, you still think he's got upside?
You never know with pitchers, but it’s a little late to expect a breakout for him.
And I know he’s had some decent seasons in the past, but he’s moving to the AL from one of the best pitching environments in the NL, so I don’t see a big year for him in 2012. Plus, he was hurt last year.
I mean, he’s a decent return for Melky Cabrera but I’m not a huge Sanchez fan.
I do like the fangraphs article explaining Jonathan Sanchez's K rate and BB rate are tied to him throwing consistently up in the zone
and that it is likely if he “learned” control and threw more strikes, it’s very likely his K rate would plummet as his main tool to getting those K’s is getting people to swing at borderline/bad pitches.
