Pirates After Jo-Jo Reyes
The neverending search to replace the irreplaceable Joe Beimel. Would be a minor league deal.

Some of the most entertaining days at the PBC Blog when Dejan was still there were when he’d post about some minor league signing and the pitchfork wavers would scream and scream and scream about the Pirates signing another crappy player. I always figured if you could find some way to eliminate everybody who posted in those threads, it’d be like the human race evolved into a new, superior species.

I can't imagine ever complaining about a minor league deal
Jose Tabata is the truth
The following is a list of everything Darren McFadden is bad at: 1) Giving birth. End of list.
Yes,
I can. Jo-Jo Reyes is flat out HORRIBLE. I spend a good deal of time following the Braves, I’ve seen him pitch in several games, he sucks. I wouldn’t go near him.
Just my opinion though…

I'm well aware Reyes is godawful
But again, minor league deal, can easily get out of it, so who really cares?
Barring an epic run of injuries, he’d never even sniff the mound in PNC Park. He’d have Lincoln, Owens and Locke ahead of him as a minimum, and I suspect the only way he can save his career is to become an effective reliever. So that would also likely put him behind Hughes, Wilson as well.
Hell, forget PNC Park, he’ll never even see the 40 man.

I would probably assume that of the three you name, only Lincoln would be ahead of him. The problem is he does have some experience, and well we’ve seen how the Pirates value that in terms of calling people up to start (Brian Burress cough cough).
I see what your saying but I’m sorry, I have a serious distaste for Reyes

If nothing else...
…we can agree he’s really, really terrible at pitching.

I’ll sort of play contrarian. Reyes is undoubtedly a terrible starting pitcher, but he might be able to succeed as a reliever. He had an 8-to-1 K/BB ratio in seven innings as a reliever last season. Yes, it was way too small of a sample size, but perhaps his stuff would improve when facing 2 or 3 batters a night. As you all know, most relievers are failed starters.

I remember people saying the same thing about Brian Burres a few years ago. If a guy’s in the system, you can never say never.
Burres is a starter. We have lots of relief depth and plenty of it is on the 40-man. Hughes, Morris, Moskos and Wilson, assuming he stays in the bullpen, are all going to get called up before some filler guy who’s not on the 40-man. The only way Reyes is getting called up is if he’s lights out in Indy, and even then it won’t last long unless he pitches well in the majors, too. Justin Thomas was great in AAA, but when they called him up they barely used him. There’s no downside here.

Reyes is a starter, too.
70 career ML games, 62 of them starts. If they get caught short by a SP injury, they could very well end up needing a fill-in starter who’s on a particular work cycle, as happened last year.
There’s also the possibility of him coming to camp, pitching his ass off for a couple of weeks, bumping a better talent out of the bullpen, and then turning back into Jo-Jo Reyes when the season starts.

Remember, Raybin...
this is the team that went through 8 catchers last year. Epic runs of injuries happen.
Reyes might be OK as epic run of injury insurance. I mean, he seems like he might be slightly more legit than whoever the pitcher equivalent of Dusty and Wyatt is.

If they have a run of injuries with the bullpen like they did at catcher, whoever ends up pitching is going to suck. Period. Nobody has that kind of depth.

right, I think we're in agreement
It’s not worth worrying about the fact that some mediocre (or sub-mediocre) reliever who signs as a minor league FA could wind up in the majors if we have an epic run of injuries, because you’re going to be scraping the bottom of the barrel no matter what if that happens.
(Is Martis also on the list of “people who will pitch in Pittsburgh before Reyes,” or would they be trying to keep him in the AAA rotation?)

I think Martis would be potential rotation depth. I don’t think Reyes would.

NH cited Martis as a potential SP candidate in the interview last night.

Haven't seen anything
in the past few days other than the O’s having interest after signing Wada. I know there are a couple of red flags (or at least yellow ones) around Chen but he’s still at the top of my wishlist. I feel like he has the most upside out of the starters that could realistically wind up in Pittsburgh next year.
