Adam Dunn on First?
Adam Dunn was recently voted as the least valuable position player in baseball. The White Soxs are currently looking to offload Floyd, Danks and Thorton for prospects to refill their non-existent farm system. Dunn has averaged 38 home runs per season over his 11 year career. His .243 lifetime batting average leaves much to be desired, but the pirates are lacking a true power threat. I believe Dunn could be obtained for a low level prospect or 2 depending on the amount of money the Pirates are willing to cover.
Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

I hadn’t really realized what a horrible season in had last year. Wow. That’s some kind of something.
It is hard to believe isn't it
Still, Dunn is not especially old and was a model of consistency until now. If taking on Dunn’s contract enabled us to get Floyd or Danks (maybe both) for a minimal return I’d have to at least consider it…

The point is
If the sox offered all 3 for a ptbnl (their return being getting out from under the donkeys contract) wouldnt you do it?
by KentuckyPirate on Dec 2, 2011 3:00 PM EST up reply actions
i dont do it for one big reason... because of how big dunn has gotten
he was in much better shape earlier in his career. he has really let himself go as a professional athlete and it may be starting to affect his performance because of his age. yes, he probably could still be back up to 35 hrs a year with a great OBP, but that much money for a guy who isnt taking his complete game seriously?
For a PTBNL?
I do that in a second. It’s highly unlikely the White Sox would, but in this hypothetical where the Pirates can swing it I would. If Dunn doesn’t work out, you can release him. Danks and Floyd would be a great return for a PTBNL on their own. And if Dunn DOES work out, damn, that’s an awesome deal.

The Sox
absolutely wouldn’t do it. They need prospects more than they need the salary relief from getting out from under Dunn’s contract. I only brought it up because, if you would make the deal for a PTBNL, then acquiring Dunn is not the issue but the asking price is the issue.
A man walks up to a woman in a bar and says “Will you sleep with me for $100M?” The woman thinks about it for a second and says “For $100M? Yes, I would.” The man says “Will you sleep with me for $5?” The woman looks at him disgusted and says “What do you think I am? A whore?” The man says “Well, we’ve already established that you are, now were just negotiating a price.”
This is the same concept. If you’d make the trade for a PTBNL then you would make the trade. The remaining question is just what you’d be willing to give up. For most people, I doubt it would be very much…

I’m guessing the most risk the Pirates could absorb without blowing the general plan would be $10-15 million over three years, and Chicago would have to absorb the rest.

I still haven’t gotten over him hitting EXACTLY 40 home runs in four straight years.

IIRC, his .159 BA is the lowest in the entire history of MLB for a hitter with 400+ PA.
He was well ahead of Rob Deer’s pace for the official record, but didn’t end up with enough PA to qualify because he got benched.
Not quite
2nd place to good old Joe Gerhardt.
Wow, do I love the sortable stats on Fangraphs.
by Wizard of Woz on Dec 2, 2011 4:09 PM EST up reply actions
Wow, that IS terrible.
Lost a full .100 of BA.
if pedro can hit the offspeed stuff, and fastballs for that matter, we already have a power source in house
the pirates should NOT take on Dunn’s contract. no way.
Dunn made 12 million last year
He is by far the worst 1B I have ever seen. He would make Doumit look like Keith Hernandez and would make Alvarez look like WhiteAngus at 3B.
it was flattering
didnt realize at the time that pretty much everyone that is signed is a 5 tool player, or at least really good across the board. i had maybe 3. 2 1/2 mostly.
He is by far the worst 1B I have ever seen.
Interesting question. On overall skill, Alex Hernandez is probably the worst I’ve ever seen play a game at the position.
It’s pretty tough to be as bad as Dunn was last year and not lose your job after a month or two. Even Dunn’s pedigree and contract weren’t enough to keep him there all year.
Heh.
Just look at the starting lineup from this game.
Emil Brown, CF
Pat Meares, SS
Enrique Wilson, 3B
Alex Ramirez, RF
Keith Osik, C
John Wehner, 3B
Alex Hernandez, 1B
Adam Hyzdu, LF
Bronson Arroyo, SP
Ready to get your mind blown? We scored three runs, and won. The mind, it reels…
It’s more my eyes that are reeling. Wow.

Looks like we had a Hall-of-Fame caliber player batting cleanup in Alex Ramirez.

Check out all the future Pirates in the Reds' box score, too:
Reese, Stynes, Casey, Villone, and Dennys Reyes.
Given Michael Tucker’s general scrubbiness and propensity for changing teams, it’s a wonder he never played for the Littlefield-era Bucs.
Ramirez will only be 37
and still projects for 306/335/503…hit 49 HRs in Japan in 2010

you must not have seen the greatness that was
Matt Stairs or Carlos Rivera at first
Bees Bees Everywhere
Rivera was decent, wasn’t he? Am I remembering that wrong?

Good fielder, not much bat.
He’s still active, surprisingly, and playing in the Mexican League. Hit .316/.404/.482 for Minatitlan last year.
Yeah, the whole excuse for playing him at all was that he could field.

Well...
First off, I will state the obligatory, “sure he has a .243 career BA, but he also has a career .374 OBP, which is far more important than BA.”
Secondly, if the Pirates have to spend money on their MLB product, which MLB is pretty much requiring with the changes to the draft and revenue-sharing rules, why not Dunn? Yes, he had a crap year last year, but maybe it had to do with switching leagues and not with a precipitous fall off the talent cliff. This is, after all, a guy who had 38+ HR for seven straight seasons and whose lowest season OPS+ in his career is 114, so it looks far more likely like last year was a brutal aberration rather than the end.
If it didn’t take too terribly much to get him, along with Danks and/or Floyd, I would certainly take the risk on him returning to form, lack of defensive skill be damned. Hide him at 1B and just pray that Neil, Clint and Pedro can throw accurately.
It's just my two cents. Could be worth more, could be worth nothing.
i highly doubt they'd trade him
I think they’re praying he rebounds in SOME SORT and regains enough value to not have to totally take it up the north side if they trade him now.
the headline makes me think of Abbot and Costello, and it kind of fits
“…What’s on second, and our first baseman is Dunn.”
“Why do you keep playing him then?”
“Who?”
“Your first baseman — what’s his name?”
“No, What is our second baseman. Our first baseman is Dunn.”
“Then why do you keep playing him?”
“Who?”
“The first baseman! You said he was done!”
“He is Dunn!”
“Why do you keep playing a guy who’s done?”
“…beats the hell out of me.”

thanks
Too late, I realized I should’ve worked in Chin-Lung Hu at short and our old friend Kris Watts behind the plate.

The right field porch would probably help him.
I don’t think its even possible to repeat that bad of a season. Ever.
I agree
Dunn is still owed $44MM over the next 3 years and the ChiSox would have to eat at least half that for the Bucs to even think about it. For that price, they might as well keep him and figure that no one can be that godawful two years in a row.

Okay, I'll play along
Dunn, Floyd and $20MM in salary relief to the Bucs for…I don’t know…Rojas, Maggi and Dodson? Ah, forget it.
I can’t even take this seriously enough to come up with a legitimate scenario.

Sorry for the Confusion
Purpose of the thread was to say White Sox are in Sell mode so why not go after Dunn for 1st base opening for the Pirates… Floyd and Danks were just used to show team is selling
The thing is, the White Sox would have to give us at least one of the other players to make it worth thinking about taking Dunn off their hands.

Keep in mind...
that the new CBA is supposed to have what amounts to a minimum payroll based on revenue sharing funds received. We may be needing to get up to a $45-50M payroll to keep MLB happy.
I’m sure the front office will find a creative way to make that happen. I just don’t think Dunn will be involved.
If Adam Dunn loses the Michelin Man look and recommits to baseball,
he might be worth a look, but that salary is astronomical for a guy who was pathetic last year.
パトリック
i agree completely. he was in much better shape with the reds.
he even looks older than his listed age now.
I worked for the Dayton Dragons when Dunn was there
That big Texas kid can drink. He’d be a huge hit around the city, taking on Pitt frat boys in chugging contests. The tickets he sells to 18-24-year-old males might be worth his contract alone.
Actually letting him play baseball? Not such a good idea.
