I don't know what perverse part of me compels me to chronicle this stuff just because it's on TV and it's Pirates-related, but here you go. Cheri Knoblauch is now Chuck Knoblauch's wife, but she's also Brian Giles' ex. You know, the one Giles allegedly abused.

I already thought the early-2000s Pirates were pretty unlovable, but "Baseball Wives" certainly seems like it's going to bring them down even further.

The Anna Benson Show

That was the name of my two-consecutive-year championship fantasy baseball team in the early 2000’s. I retired it after that. What a crazy braud.

Me neither.
I don’t know what perverse part of me compels me to chronicle this stuff…

I have a feeling though that this show won’t last long.

I don't know...

there’s some pretty stupid stuff that gets on TV. Like about 70 percent of the “reality” shows.

by Thunder on Dec 3, 2011 12:12 AM EST up reply actions

I see.

Most of my TV watching is sports related. Baseball, hockey and football. So I don’t see most reality shows. I didn’t think they were that bad.

I'd be interested

to see the list of shows that fall under the 30 percent you think AREN’T stupid.

OK, I admit to watching “The Amazing Race,” even though I don’t really care who wins this season. And “Hell’s Kitchen.” And “Masterchef.” But that’s IT.

by bucdaddy on Dec 3, 2011 1:03 AM EST up reply actions

I knew I liked you for a reason

Hell’s Kitchen and Masterchef are about the only non-sports TV I make it a point to watch.

Gordon Ramsey

is also great in Restaurant Nightmares. Also check out Storage Wars, and 1000 Ways To Die.

by SteelStealth on Dec 3, 2011 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

Yup

Love Kitchen Nightmares, too, but we usually miss it since it’s on Friday night.

by matskralc on Dec 3, 2011 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

Yes indeedy.

Ramsey is a huge asshole, but he’s a passionate asshole. He wants everyone to care about the food and the presentation and the kitchen as much as he does. He’d be a monster to work for, but I have no doubt that when he’s through with you, if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll be a very good chef.

Joe Bastianich, OTOH … guy is one cold mofo.

by bucdaddy on Dec 4, 2011 12:09 AM EST up reply actions

I’m actually not as big on the Ramsey shows where he’s throwing pans and calling people “donkeys”. I think he’s really at his best in stuff like this. Good, simple explanations of how to cook basic foods, presented with enthusiasm, and never any sense that he’s looking down on the audience for not being on his level.

Breaking Bad is pretty good

Pawn Stars is amusing. That’s about it for me with TV.

Good post Charlie. I don’t have a TV, so I need your help to keep up with Anna B.

Can't believe you keep posting about this.

Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?

gotta agree here

no offense charlie, but i hope this is your last post on the topic. i was interested in this crap i’d read deadspin.

Or, you know...

skip over them without comment.

by cocktailsfor2 on Dec 3, 2011 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

i’m happy to skip over all of the “we should trade our crap for other team’s good players” posts without comment. as even charlie seems hesitant about writing about it, i thought i’d air my grievances.

by johnnycuff on Dec 3, 2011 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

I hate it too, and I don’t plan on writing about it regularly, but my advice would be to skip over this stuff when it does come up. Hopefully the show will just die the death, but if it doesn’t, it has the potential to make the Pirates as relevant as they’ve been since 1979, for better or for worse. (Oh, who are we kidding? For worse.) I don’t want to deal with it either, but I do feel like it warrants at least some coverage.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Dec 3, 2011 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

Hey Charlie,

how about a book review about a new release on the Pirates? Heard a book has come out, called “The Battling Bucs of 1925: How the Pittsburgh Pirates pulled off the greatest comeback in World Series history” by Ronald Waldo.

Sounds like an interesting topic, I plan on picking up a copy next month. Since 1925 was so long ago, that memorable series doesn’t often come up when talking about the Fall Classic.

by SteelStealth on Dec 3, 2011 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll often do stuff like that if the author or publisher writes to me, but honestly, I’ve got no shortage of reading I want to do on my own and don’t have time to do, so it’s got to be something I can’t wait to read if I’m going to hunt stuff down myself.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Dec 3, 2011 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

No offense, I've haven't heard any other mention of this anywhere else so I doubt it changes the Pirates relevance nationally.

That may turn out to be true, in which case I’ll stop. I’m not doing this for my health.

by Charlie Wilmoth on Dec 3, 2011 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

(Also, a short post I wrote about this at SB Nation Pittsburgh today got almost 3,000 hits just from Google, which is the most search hits I’ve ever gotten for any Pirates post for SBNP, by several orders of magnitude. It’s just not true that people aren’t paying attention to this.)
