Pirates Sign Anderson Hernandez
The Pirates have signed infielder Anderson Hernandez to a minor-league contract. Hernandez has played for the Mets, Nationals, Indians and Astros, but he spent all of 2011 in Class AAA Oklahoma City. His primary position is shortstop, and the Pirates will have a bunch of those at Class AAA, so it's hard to imagine he'll get much playing time there, and I don't think there's much chance he'll get back to the majors with the Bucs, either.

anyone know
if we still have JRod? so AAA has Holt at 2nd, Chase ss, Mercer or Harrison at 3b depending on who might make the big club. Hernandez begins the backup at AAA with JRod? as a super utility type. Marte, Gorkys, Lambo in the outfield i assume.
Yes
J-Rod isn’t eligible for minor league free agency yet. Indy already figures to be seriously overloaded with infielders. If Nunez pushes Navarro to AAA, that leaves Mercer, Harrison, d’Arnaud, Navarro, Holt, J-Rod and Brian Friday, who’s still around. Plus, they probably should be giving Hague some time at third, especially with Clement around. I can’t imagine what need there is for Hernandez.

JRod and Navarro do have outfield experience ..
and i suppose Holt could still be at AAA if needed

the easy solution
is to have him in spring training in case of injury, and just cut him
I'd totally forgotten about him!
He was someone I thought could’ve been a semi-useful piece somewhere…
The glare of the spotlight is harsh, and the pressure that success breeds immense. We revere our heroes, but expect much. And criticism can come as easily as praise.
Perspectives become reality.

something in the works for mercer or d'arnaud?
i also cant imagine Nunez beating out Navarro but crazier things have happened
We Do
Still owe the Padres a player for Ludwick. I believe the PTBNL has to be picked by the end of 6 months and would probably occur before the start of spring training.
I will be very, very angry if Mercer is the PTBNL.
Not actually affiliated with whygavs.

He can beat him out...
if Hurdle wants a real defense-first SS on the bench, like Ciriaco last year. I have no idea why they signed Hernandez or how they will sort out the IF mess they have created for themselves at the upper levels.

Adalberto Santos
should start at AA but will it be the of or 2b? i like him as a super-sub type guy and at 24 would love to see him hit AAA at some point this year. underrated prospect.
I like him too...
but his offense would play much better at 2B. I don’t think he can handle it defensively, though. But his bat will get him to the big leagues.

Clever
Now Hurdle can play Anderson and have Henrnadez coming of the bench, or vice versa.

Huntington Goes Christmas Shopping
buys a ton of worthless stocking stuffers at the dollar store, a few lottery tickets for a drawing to be held in about 4 years, some project kits that are nonfunctional and have to be put together by the giftee, boring “worth it for the price” commodities, but no big surprise gift under the tree.

Better than signing
Anderson Cooper…

If nothing else, he’s a pretty good glove man, which isn’t a bad thing as far as the development of our young pitchers is concerned.
He was also originally a Detroit signee, so he’s a guy with whom the ex-Tiger contingent among our scouts would be familiar. Maybe he just wanted a job of any sort for 2012, and they decided to do him a solid based on past associations? Or they see him as having a post-playing role in the organization in the mid-term future, like Larry Broadway?
Or maybe he’s part of a renewed obsession with veteran bench players.

Merry Christmas, WTM.
