Nats Win Gio Derby
Not Pirate news, but interesting. A's got Brad Peacock, Tom Milone, A.J. Cole and Derek Norris. That's a really good haul and shows the value of prospects who are ML-ready or close to it.

They must cook up some good meth in Nats HQ
Mike Rizzo just got taken.

The following is a list of everything Darren McFadden is bad at: 1) Giving birth. End of list.
To clarify
I love Gonzalez’s stuff and durability and he has the potential to really mow down NL batters having averaged 8.54 K/9 in the AL.
That said, Nats just gave up 3 of their top 10 prospects (as ranked by Fangraphs) and I’m not sure Gonzalez is THAT good.

I think they gave up a lot, but they believe they’re a frontline starter away from contention. Beane did a good job of ratcheting up the market for Gonzalez and the Nats evidently paid the market price. Their rotation is set without Peacock and Milone, they have a strong back of the bullpen, and they already have their long-term catcher in Wilson Ramos. They paid heavily, but they could afford to. The guys they really need at the ML level—primarily Rendon and Harper—they’ve still got.
Occupy MLB! Down with Seligula!
For their sake...
…I hope they’re not fast-tracking Harper too much. (Random thought there)
The front of their rotation if Strasburg stays healthy looks NASTY though. That’s an awful lot of potential whiffs.

This
is true. Similar to the Reds as far as trading from depth.

That is a ton to give up.
Billy Beane will bury us all.

Billy done good
I feel awful for A’s fans though. I’m sure most know it had to be done, but to see two guys of the caliber of Cahill & Gonzalez dealt away within a week or so of each other…that has to be a swift kick in the crotch.

If they ever do get that stadium and an increase in payroll the As could be deadly again, if not, they appear to be in a continual rebuild

true but i couldnt name the last As player to sign a long term contract, buying out solid FA years, I have faith the PIrates will be able to sign a few of these types of deals, hell, they already did with Tabata. Will it be the Cutch and Alvarez’s of the world, maybe not, but I expect some players to stick

He's not anywhere near that good...
4.32 career ERA on the road and xFIPs just under 4.00. Nationals paid a package worthy of an ace, and this guy ain’t no ace.

Exactly this
People who point out the Nats could afford to give up these prospects are right, but Gonzalez is not the pitcher I would’ve given them up for.

Nats are trying to win now
they have foundation pieces already in place; an ace on the mound and a solid 2 and 3, a top flight 3b, harper in RF. werth and a fat wallet out there too. plus the owner is like seriously loaded…
peacock, cole and norris all could bomb as well as succeed. you cant just rely on all of your prospects to blossom into great players.
great trade for both clubs, IMO
Unfortunately, that's pretty much what the Pirates have to do
For the foreseeable future, if the prospects bust, it’s more losing for the Buccos. It’s build internally or fail. Free agency can net them useful role players like Barmes or bounceback guys like Bedard….it can’t get them franchise cornerstones.

For teams like the Pirates, building a team through prospects is literally all you can do. When FA’s won’t come here because you don’t have the cash or your a crappy team all you can do is build through the draft, sorry if that can’t get through certain people on this site.

Agreed
Nats really overpaid on this one.

Yep.
When I first saw that Gio got traded to the Nats, my guess on the return was Peacock, Norris, and a couple scrubs or lottery tickets, which would have been an even trade in my opinion. But since the “scrubs” turned out to be Cole and Milone, it’s a huge win for Oakland.

How many brooks would a Brooks Laich like if a Brooks Laich could like brooks?
The Nats gave up a lot but it’s true they didn’t really need those guys. The trouble is most of the rest of their top 10 are injury concerns (Purke, Rendon, Solis) or higher than normal bust potential (Meyer, Hood, Lombardozzi). That system could be a ghost town in a year.
Stras/Gio/Zimm is pretty nice though.
i wouldnt be surprised if Peacock comes back down to earth
his “wicked” knuckle curve may not fool the average MLBer like it did the minor leaguers in 2011. he was a 41st round pick who actually stuck and was pretty much fodder until this past season.
gio, despite the walks, keeps runners off base.
good trade for both though. milone could end up being the better pitcher
