The game actually took place on Wednesday, but due to holiday craziness, I didn't get a chance to post it until now. It's staged in an Australia vs. The World format, and the World team won this year by a score of 9 to 5 - the link above goes to the box score.

First baseman Stefan Welch, a minor league free agent signed out of the Mets' system this offseason, started and batted cleanup for Team Australia, going 1-for-4 with a run scored. Rinku Singh pitched the sixth inning for the World and allowed three hits and three runs (only two earned - the last one scored on a two-out passed ball). Welch's hit and run came against Singh. Ryan Beckman pitched the eighth inning for the World and allowed one run on one hit, a home run to left by former Indians minor leaguer Joshua Roberts.

In addition to the three players, Pirates scout (and Adelaide manager) Tony Harris was one of the coaches for Team Australia.

Best Post Of The Year!

Thank God Vlad didn’t make this a fanshot. Don’t be fooled by the names of the teams in Australia, Adelaide Bite, Brisbane Bandits, Sydney BlueSox, and the Canaberra Cavalry, this League is for real! Don’t believe me? Just ask any of the 2800 fans who braved the 28 degree weather. I didn’t even know there was an Australian League and the Pirates have Tony Harris there who is not only the manager of the Bite but is a scout as well. I want more Vlad! This is the relevant stuff that can get us through the winter! I’m sure some posters here will run with this. An Australian Bucs Community Prospect List will surely follow. Should we trade Stefan Welch to the Bandits for middle relief help? Afterall there is quite a logjam at 1B. Keep up the great work Vlad and Merry Christmas!

A couple of things:

A) This IS a FanShot. You can tell by the gray background. It just happens to be a FanShot on the front page.

B) Seasons in Australia are reversed from ours, since they’re in the other hemisphere. That “28 degrees” is a reading in Celsius, the measurement most commonly used in Australia; by Farenheit, Perth’s having daily highs a little over 80 right now.

C) Harris has been our primary area scout for Australia for more than two years now, and over that period of time, he’s signed six Australian prospects for us. None are real hotshots at this point, but it does speak to an increased level of interest in the region on the part of the team, which is worth noting. Harris is also fairly notable in his own right, in that he’s coached the Australian national team on numerous occasions, including the 2004 Olympics, where they won the silver medal.

D) There aren’t many actual games going on right now. If you aren’t interested in winter ball, that’s fine, but most people who read the site are baseball fans who enjoy reading and talking about games – particularly ones involving players from our organization.

E) What makes the “Brisbane Bandits” or “Sydney BlueSox” any sillier as names than the “State College Spikes” or the “Altoona Curve”? And how big do you think most minor league parks are, if a crowd of 2,800 is worthy of mockery?

F) Merry (almost) Christmas to you, too.

Sorry Vlad

I just thought the Post was intended to be a joke and I went along with it. Didn’t you write not long ago a really long post full of satire about the new draft changes? I mean are you serious? Front page, telling us how Stefan Welch went 1 for 4 with a run scored? I thought you were just poking fun at all of the stupid posts this time of year. Rinko Singh gave up 3 runs in 1 inning(only 2 earned as one scored on a passed ball!). How in the world can that be taken for anything but hold your stomach laughter? Nineteen straight losing seasons but we have Rinko Singh and lots of talent in Australia! Merry Christmas you old building and loan! Merry Christmas Mr Potter! Well whatta ya know, sure I’m getting banned again, HEEEHAWWWW! Merry Christmas Charlie! Merry Christmas Cutchisthetruth! Merry Christmas Brakeman! Happy Hannakuh Cocktailsfor2!

two points

1. WTM wrote the post you’re thinking of.

2. It is absolutely awesome that RInku was pitching well enough to make the all-star game. If you aren’t rooting for Rinku to succeed, you should just become a Yankees fan, because you have no soul. It’s in the chart.

Well whatta ya know, sure I’m getting banned again…

You’d think the message would sink in, eventually.

How in the world can that be taken for anything but hold your stomach laughter?

Why would it be a joke? It’s an All-Star game. Some of our guys played well enough to make that All-Star team, so I thought people might be curious to know how they did in the actual game.

Rinku did very well in regular league games this winter. 11 1/3 innings, 1.59 ERA, 0.71 WHIP, 10/1 K/BB. I’d assess the ABL as being approximately equal to A-ball in quality (maybe A-), and it seems like a fairly lively league-wide offensive context, so that’s a very solid performance against an appropriate level of competition. It’s an encouraging sign for the spring. He’s not a joke, and he doesn’t deserve to be treated like one.

Wow. Just wow.

So an A level pitcher throws 11 1/3 innings in Australia and that’s worthy of Front Page news? I agree though that HE is not the joke here.

Front page news?

It’s the slowest weekend of the year for baseball news and Vlad posts something interesting about a winter league that’s pretty close to his heart. You probably don’t know this, but he spent his early childhood in Australia, so his interest in antipodean baseball is understandable.

Bona fide minor league baseball players from the americas play baseball alongside Australians in the sunshine. Where is the joke?

He's simply seeing how far he can push it at this point.

And then will try to come back with yet another screen name.

I used to be amused, then cheesed off by it. Now I understand it’s just pathetic.

Nice interview with NH and Vald on Rumbunter.

Hope the front office don’t step in and stop the relaxed style and every day rhetoric..

All the best to Jen Langosch. She was the most accurate Pirates reporter while she was in Pittsburgh.

I’m just saying, anyone who can’t take pleasure in any success Rinku has is a little too attuned to the overdog to fit in comfortably as a Bucs fan.

I went to a Melbourne Aces vs Perth Heat game earlier this year and had a great time.

It was a pleasant January summer’s evening at the small, but newly re-furbished ballpark within the showgrounds complex in suburban Melbourne. The admission was $10, and though quite sparse (maybe 700?), the fans were very knowledgeable and seemed to thoroughly enjoy baseball in what is a cricket mad area. If I remember correctly, Justin Huber hit a grand slam for Perth to win a really high scoring game. My only beef with the whole set-up was that the right field wall was far too close, especially considering Melbourne is known for it’s strong winds.

I have a couple of pretty good photos of the game, but don’t know how to post them here from my hard drive. I would gladly email them to somebody who could post them in this thread

A few things

A) “The Adelaide Bite” sounds pretty cool if you say it with an Australian accent. Try it!

B) Developments in Australia are worth keeping an eye on – for a country with a relatively small population, it produces an amazing number of world-class athletes. Although Australia hasn’t produced an MLB star so far – or even an above-average regular – there are already a goodly number of Aussie major leaguers, considering that the sport isn’t particularly popular over there yet. I think it is only a matter of time until we get some really good players from down under.

C) 2,800 isn’t a bad showing, attendance-wise. It would be kinda like getting 2,800 Americans to show up at an American Cricket League All Star Game. Seems like they’re making some progress promoting the sport.

D) Interesting article. thanks for posting it.

You could maybe make a case for Dave Nilsson as an above-average regular, depending on what you think of his defense.

Best pitchers so far have been relievers, most notably Grant Balfour, Graeme Lloyd, and Peter Moylan.

I had great hopes for Luke Prokopec, once upon a time…

Peter Moylan

is available… let’s put him in black & gold!!!

I watched this game

not too impressive about the 2 hurlers. Singh who doesn’t have a smooth mechanism were hittable against righty, but were good against the other side. His fastball sit at higher 80s (below 140km/h), I thought he had some chance to live up a lefty specialist. Beckham had a good feel for his fastball, which touched 92~93mph (about 150km/h). if I remember correctly, the homerun ball was a off-speed, which needs more development.
