Bucs Dugout Top Prospect #4
Poll #3 is now closed. Marte won the third spot with 68% of the vote. Bell got 24%, with Grossman and Heredia getting a couple stray votes as well. There were some suggestions for adding new players to the poll, which I've taken note of, but I'm not going to add them yet. If anyone wants to vote for someone who's not in the poll, just post their name under "others" and respond with a "+1."
Please limit discussion to the "discussion" section, so we keep the actual voting clean.
The candidates for this poll are Stetson Allie, Josh Bell, Robbie Grossman, Luis Heredia, Kyle McPherson, and Tony Sanchez. Poll will run for 24 hours.

Honestly
I’m pretty surprised Josh Bell seems to be running away with this one so far (18-2 over Heredia so far) so I just want to give my take on it. Based on pure “upside” Heredia might be the best prospect in the entire system. I was very encouraged by his performance in the GCL this year and I could really see him taking some huge strides this year in State College. Having said that, I just feel like he’s a bit too far away from the bigs to put ahead of Bell. Bell has the makings of a truly special hitter and I wouldn’t be all that surprised to see him taking cuts at Bradenton by the end of 2012. I realize that is a little optimistic but he is that talented. Because the Pirates will be careful with Heredia’s young arm, I think he spends the whole year in short-season ball. While it wouldn’t surprise me to see him put up some really good numbers there, the distance from the majors has me putting him just a tick behind Josh Bell.

Even if he fails . . .
It is hard for me to say that a great hitting high schooler can be ranked higher than a power pitcher like Heredia, who has already shown his stuff in the pros. Heredia is younger than Bell as well giving more potential for growth, and added power on his pitches. Heredia can fall far short of his potential and still end up being a middle of the rotation starter. How many prospects can you really say that about?

I think you're right, but...
…it says a lot about Bell’s upside that he’s about >< that far behind him.
Here’s an 18 year old kid who can hit for power and average from either side of the plate and draws walks like a mofo, something most 18 year olds are not known for. The Pirates Prospects guide pointed out he walks 1/3rd of the time and his slugging is higher than most people’s OPS. He has speed and I’ve not read or seen anything to persuade me his glove is less than perfectly adequate.
How more people aren’t absolutely drooling over Bell to the degree that I am is something I have difficulty understanding.
I have him ranked above Marte because to me his power is more valuable than Marte’s speed and fielding. Your mileage may vary, of course.
Jose Tabata is the truth
The following is a list of everything Darren McFadden is bad at: 1) Giving birth. End of list.
It will be interesting
Bell is a great prospect don’t get me wrong. I just think that he will not walk near as much in the pros. High School pitchers are not known for control over all. He probably does have an above average eye, but people will soon start pitching to him and nibbling at the corners. I want to see that rate in the pros before I put him above Heredia.

I think Pedro doesn’t count as a prospect for the purposes of this poll — too much major league time.

Funny
Bell was up early, and then a push by Heredia. If you look at the timestamps, it seems like the people on here at night prefer Bell, while those who are on during the day prefer Heredia.
I would have Bell a little further down on the list at present.
A WVU loss in the Orange Bowl would make a good start to 2012.
Baseball tickets in Japan (Tokyo/Osaka)
Hi, any chance (if you’re reading this, patthatt) you can point me in the right direction for getting tickets. We’re flying in early April, and we’re looking to go see Giants or Tigers. Is there a website for gaijins? Many thanks in advance. (Sorry, I’d probably have to keep stalking you. Not sure if there is such a thing as sending PMs within SBNation…)
