for me

once again Im going with the upside/raw talent. FEAR had a great year and is closer to the majors by a long shot over Allie, but there was a reason while Allie was so highly regarded, to me he should be #8 at this point, McPherson will get my vote at 9

I'm still a fan of Allie's

and I think he could shoot up this list (and other prospect lists) if he shows minimal improvement of his command. For right now though, his command is so horrible that it completely negates his excellent stuff. McPherson’s coming off a very strong year and has better stuff than Owens so I don’t have the same concerns about a setback in AAA.

Hate

to be that guy, but anyone think we should have spent that 2 million on A.J. Cole at this point?

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Dec 30, 2011 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

The

coulda signed Cole in the 3rd round instead of Rojas and had them both. I know Cole was more expensive than Rojas but I’d look at it the same way I look at giving Bell $5M. If the marginal cost of signing Cole over Rojas was about $1.5M, how do you not greenlight that move?

by KentuckyPirate on Dec 30, 2011 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

Eh

Naw. It doesn’t work like that. Bell was 6th on our board. That’s enough for 5 million. Cole was probably 30rd or 40th and Rojas wasn’t that far behind. Not far enough behind to be worth 1.5 million.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Dec 30, 2011 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

I understand

the reasons that it didn’t happen but as you suggested by saying Cole>Allie, this is just a matter of looking back and saying which guy you’d rather have. Put another way, if you asked the Pirates today if they’d give the Nats Rojas and 1.5 mil in exchange for Cole, would the Pirates take it? I think the Bucs would do that in a heartbeat.

by KentuckyPirate on Dec 31, 2011 12:25 AM EST up reply actions

Yes

but you are adding extra factors lol. Same thing with Mike Trout over Tony Sanchez. Buster Posey or Brett Lawrie and Alvarez.

This is a fairly simple and even 1 for 1 swap in my opinion.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Dec 31, 2011 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

The swap

looks simple on paper ($2M prep pitcher for a $2M prep pitcher) you’re still talking about adjusting the Pirates’ rankings on Allie and Cole. If the Pirates really had Cole ranked as the 30th best player on the board, it wouldn’t make sense for them to take him over Allie if they had him ranked as 15th. If they did have him ranked that high, it would make just as much sense for them to give him $2M in the 3rd round. All I’m saying is that I don’t think there is that much of a difference in wishing that the Pirates thought highly enough of Cole to take him over an equally expensive pitching prospect and thinking highly enough of him that he’d be worth more than a cheaper, toolsy guy like Rojas.

Ultimately, there’s no use in dwelling on it now any more than wishing they had Lawrie instead of Pedro, managed to sign Sano and never dealt Joey Bats. Just my take…

Prospects have question marks by definition

Everyone knew Allie was a project when we got him (throw out his numbers from this year) and his upside is too high to put him any lower.

by Mr. E on Dec 31, 2011 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

OT

but Im looking at BAs top 10 for us last season. Their projected 2014 roster for us really doesnt seem that far off. Lambo wont be at 1B, Heredia and B. Morris probably wont be in the roation. If Allie moves to the pen, than yeah, he could be up by then. But otherwise it looks to be pretty damn close to what I’m picturing that year, of course, add in G. Cole as well

that's because

its closer to last season than 2014 right now… wait another year, and a couple more pieces will have changed. Then another year, and a few more changes. Then, 2014…

question

and maybe im just imagining things but didnt we sign some gigantic 1B from some central american country. I remember it not making much headlines and there was very little video on the guy/kid/whatever his age was but I remember thinking he was huge and had great power potential.

any clue as to who im thinking of?

by C Shint on Dec 30, 2011 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve been wondering about him too. When he was signed, it was reported that he’d be coming directly to the states, but as far as I can tell he didn’t play anywhere last season, let alone in the states, and then he wasn’t at instructs this fall either. I wonder what’s going on with him.

by epoc on Dec 30, 2011 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

yeah very curious

maybe its the case that he is coming to the states this season?

Cunningham

He’s the next position player on my list, but I like several pitchers before him.

by epoc on Dec 30, 2011 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

I'm a huge Cunningham fan. . .

but I think his strike-zone judgment and defensive questions push him down a bit. But man, when he makes contact, good shit happens.

Everything that guy just said is bullshit . . .thank you

To

me, other than Allie, Jarek has the highest ceiling left in the system and it’s not even close. That includes guys like ZVR, Holmes, Osuna, etc. Gotta go upside whore here.

Dickerson

i noticed MITT that you have him 13th on your site. first thing that came to mind was a report i read that he may only have slightly above average power. went to your site to see if you mentioned that and you did – unfortunately. i had almost convinced myself that i hadn’t read that. anyway, may as well wait a while to talk about that – just bored right now.

by slYke on Dec 31, 2011 2:55 AM EST reply actions

I

think his power could range from average to plus. He certainly could hit 25 HR’s in the major leagues. Baseball America stated that pitchers were unwilling to pitch inside to Dickerson his junior year, and that’s what could have led to his low HR totals. The PA’s he had in State College were too small a sample size to really worry about, so let’s just wait till next year. He could easily go out and hit say 18 HR’s in the FSL, meaning he’ll be fine.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Dec 31, 2011 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

NotGuilty

You voted for Ngoepe in the last poll and Osuna here. What made you change your vote? Also, why do you prefer those guys over, say, Hanson and Dickerson?

by epoc on Dec 31, 2011 1:45 PM EST reply actions

While I can't speak for NotGuilty

I am a big Osuna fan. I love the low K rate out of a power hitting 1B. I definitely wouldn’t have him this high and wouldn’t put him over Dickerson but I’m stoked to see him at State College this year. If he can continue to develop this year (weren’t we saying this about Cayones too?) he could shoot up a lot of prospect lists for 2013.

As for Ngoepe, I honestly thought that vote was a joke.

by KentuckyPirate on Dec 31, 2011 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

I think we could probably call this one

McPherson is up 27-12 over Allie. Kingham has 2 votes while Locke, Cunningham and Osuna each got 1. I’m looking forward to the next round!

by KentuckyPirate on Jan 2, 2012 1:36 PM EST reply actions

dang, none for Rudy

As a point of personal privilege, can I request he be kept on for the next round? He’s next on my board, such as it is.
