Er . . . pardon me, that would be Allstarandgoldglovernate McLouth.

McLouth might be better than Jones to have as a fourth outfielder. Not considerably so, but he could probably field a corner better than Jones does.

That said, I’m not really enthusiastic about the idea. He’s still Nate McLouth.

No jinx no jinx no jinx.

As a 5th OFer for the league minimum maybe.

No way he should start, I would rather have Gorkys and Jones as the reserves but it wouldnt be terrible if Gorkys was in AAA for a bit longer.

Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?

5th OF?

Like WTM says, he’s All-Star Gold Glover Nate McLouth!!!!! I’m surprised the Yankees don’t want him as a starter!!!

i dont see a problem with mclouth being the top reserve outfielder

i applauded his trade the day it happened, even though it was a shock. i always thought he was a decent player; couldnt hurt to have him back in the XP role.

by white angus on Dec 5, 2011 7:25 AM EST reply actions

I applauded it as well

and thinking back, I’m not sure the last time the Pirates traded a “star”…and had talent in AAA ready to step in and replace him.

It was an uncomfortable feeling….because it was such a foreign feeling.

Every new tidbit that comes out of the winter meetings...

…only makes me more discouraged from the optimism I had a couple weeks ago

Pirates likely to be quiet. Okay, I can live with that, but then…

…Pirates inquiring about Ian Stewart. Hate to give up assets for him, but I suppose but then….

…Pirates want Nate Mclouth. May have to start drinking before noon.

Why pay Mclouth anything? Presley-Cutch-Tabata-Hernandez is a perfectly respectable outfield quartet.

"May have to start drinking before noon."

I advocate that even if you’re not all freaked out.

.
But seriously – it’s all talk and speculation. Don’t worry.

I’m just curious to see whether the endless screaming about the McLouth trade would continue if the Pirates ended up with Morton/Gorkys/Locke AND McLouth.

My guess is the same people who’ve been screaming about the trade for two and a half years would rip NH for re-acquiring Nate.

Honestly, after reading this...

…I may be okay with the re-acquiring of Mclouth just on the grounds of “haha, up yours, Atlanta”

Of all the various tantrums people throw about NH's moves...

…the least explicable are ones who whine about Mclouth.

NH sold high and got the Bucs Morton (as things stand now, their best starter when healthy), Locke (their #10 prospect as ranked by BA) and Hernandez (who looks to be developing into a nice 4th OF) AND, let’s not forget, Mclouth was traded because McCutchen was ready.

I would legitimately rank that as one of the two truly brilliant deals NH has pulled off his Pirate tenure (the other of course being the outright theft of Tabata along with Karstens and DCutch)

FWIW

I understood it as a baseball move (and let’s be honest, it looks a lot better in retrospect than it did at the time – I don’t think McLouth’s collapse was foreseen; regression maybe, but not collapse), but I was very frustrated by it as a white flag on ’09, ’10…. I was a Morton skeptic (still am to an extent), so to me it looked like a move to solidify the future, not the present.

I love Bloody Maries

Marys? Anyway, the trouble is that I start very slowly wrt eating & drinking; probably 25% of mornings I don’t have anything but water, maybe a piece of toast, before noon. So the Bloodies just don’t fit in my overall schedule, alcohol aside.

Excuses, excuses, excuses...

I don’t need your excuses, man.

And I don’t need to justify my alcoholism to you, either.

I can quit any time I want to, my friend.

I'm

pretty sure everyone realizes this, but this would be basically a non-story if it wasn’t a name fairly infamous in recent Pirates history.

Honestly, I’m okay with this, mainly because it is a non-starter. As Raybin pointed out, Gorkys Hernadez is probably ready to be a 4th outfielder at this point, and even if McLouth projects to be better with the bat (pinch hitter?) he won’t be a difference maker. Still, the reason I’m okay with it is it won’t cost much and “blocking” Hernandez is a minor inconvenience not a major problem. I won’t lose sleep over either. Plus, I doubt it happens anyway.

maybe

having McLouth as a reserve, we can trade Gorkys to a team in dire need of some CF help? Im sure there are better options out there, but just a thought.

Thats what she said! - Michael Gary Scott

I keep trying to figure out

whether Gorkys has any trade value. He doesn’t have much of a ceiling anymore, but he’s probably a better CF than a half dozen teams have. But I just don’t get the sense that anyone cares.

by JRoth95 on Dec 5, 2011 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

hes the gary pettis of the new generation

his glove will probably keep him in baseball for a dozen years. his bat will keep him on the bench for half that.

by white angus on Dec 5, 2011 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

white angus

His glove might keep him in the majors for a total of 12 months spread out over a few years.

Sounds to me like putting out feelers/insurance in case Lee declines and Jones will be needed at 1B.

It could also mean Gorkys’ reasonable line was built on bloops and bleeders and they don’t think he could be respectable even in a 5th OF role just yet.

by Mr. E on Dec 5, 2011 12:33 PM EST reply actions

Ain't gonna' happen

McLouth is like Snooky – the Pirates might want to tak pretty to him, but they ain’t gonna give him the ring – he was far too nasty when spurned the last time….remember the rip on the Pirates medical staff and management?

What does that mean?!
