Heyman: Angels in search of a closer; Padres desperate for bullpen help
So the Angels want a closer. Kendrys Morales at 1st is probably expendable for them based on Mark Trumbo's emergence.
The Pirates have Hanrahan. You see where I'm going with this.
Heyman also notes that the Padres are big into the reliever market. They've lost Heath Bell to FA and Mike Adams to trade. They need a closer and are in a position where few players on their team can be considered untouchable.
Cory Luebke would look awful good in a Buccos uniform.

I really hope to take advantage of market and trade Hanrahan
Padres seem like the kind of team to not be willing to trade prospects or good young players which should be our goal with Hanrahan.
Kendry Morales seems to be a good player basically in his prime. He was injured last year though but played well when he did and is projected to bat pretty well again. Does anyone know what his contract status is? I just don’t know with him if he’s not the type of acquisition we should make next year or the year after when we’re truly ready to contend
I think there might be better options out there to get a younger 1B or other prospects. Blue Jays and Boston remain pretty good targets for a Hanrahan trade too
Morales could be had
for much less, He is 2nd year arbitration eligible, and will make 5 or 6 mill if he plays
Bees Bees Everywhere
I could see the Angels making a play for Hanrahan, but they have their feelers out on a bunch of other big names, so it probably wouldn’t happen until they were done with the other areas of the market they are investigating.
The Padres? They’re barely in better shape than the Pirates right now, so I cannot imagine them ponying up for a high-priced closer when they need to fill a lot of holes.
As Mingy put above, Boston and Toronto are the types of teams that would overpay for a closer, so Neal may want to keep his options open for a while longer to let the market tighten a little more.
It's just my two cents. Could be worth more, could be worth nothing.
Starling Marte has the range to patrol that big LF at Petco
Hanrahan + Marte for Luebke….would that be an overpayment?
Also, Hanrahan is projected to make ~4MM in arbitration, which is about half of what Bell made for them last year, so he’s not really “high priced”.
Jose Tabata is the truth
The following is a list of everything Darren McFadden is bad at: 1) Giving birth. End of list.
And FWIW, I think the Padres would listen to offers on him
The San Diego Union-Tribue listed Cameron Maybin, Mat Latos, Anthony Rizzo and Nick Hundley as the only untouchables on the Padres roster

love Luebke
and he’s had a great two first years. xFIP under 3.5 for both, but would HOPE we could get him for less than Hanny AND Marte. Hanny, Hague, maybe C+ prospect or so? that would be awesome. Maybe jordy mercer although kind of like him a lot
My point about "high-priced" is...
…only partially based on his salary. It is also based on what it would take for the Padres to get him from the Pirates.
If I were them, there is no way I would deal Luebke for Hanrahan unless I was getting a Marte back also, but then that deal makes no sense for the Pirates, because they may need Marte going forward depending on what happens with McCutcheon.
Better the Pirates turn their eyes to a contender like Boston that has a definite “keep up with the Joneses (or Yankees)” situation to deal with and will give back prospects to the Bucs without us having to sacrifice anything of significant potential future value.
It's just my two cents. Could be worth more, could be worth nothing.
Fair point on Marte being Cutch insurance
The uncertainty of his status makes it tough to predict anything, since he’s probably the biggest bullet NH can fire from his trade gun, but only if they can be assure of buying out 1-2 years of Cutch’s free agency.

i know this is a faux-pas on this site
but would anyone REALLY hate getting Lars Anderson?!? Just turned 24! I still would love to acquire Jed Lowrie too although some people hate that idea as well. Hanrahan for the two of them, how could you say no?
Remember too what the Blue Jays GM (Alex Antrosomethinggreek) said about the market too – willing to trade for closer
If Mingy is primetime
then he must be growing up. I don’t see primetime knowing that the word faux-pas exists, let alone spelling it correctly (also OK without the apostrophe) and using it appropriately.
thanks, i guess
was long time reader of site then took next step of addiction to make account to comment a few months ago. really keeps the work day going, you guys. i use my extensive sabr knowledge to lead the softball league i played in OBP , bsr WAR, and gritty plays. Yeah, that was the proper use of the oxford comma too.
Mingy is not

better question for you people
is who you’d like to see us pry from Red Sox. I find them to be perfect trading partner but what do they have that interests us? The Iglesias SS guy? Would make sense right given that Barmes being here would give him two years to season & age in the minors
not Iglesias
although i wouldnt mind him as a throw in in the backend. For Hanrahan, I’d probably want Lavarnway, but that may be more than the Sox are willing to do.
Maybe a deal with Kalish plus another high-upside, good current status prospect. Brentz might be the guy here. Maybe it’s too much— i’m really not sure, i don’t follow the Sox that closely.
A deal with Will Middlebrooks or Kyle Wieland with other good pieces might work too, but I guess the Sox system isn’t quite that exciting to me right now…
was checking
http://www.soxprospects.com/
this website has some good info. Bogaerts was their ‘breakout player of the year’. Same still holds true because we have Barmes for 2 years can afford to wait on high/low A level player with big upside.
i was just going off memory
yeah, forgot about Bogaerts, I’ve seen him hyped around sites, but haven’t seen him so don’t know— numbers look really good, and we’ll probably have to wait 3 years for him, but that’s fine, if he can field SS legitimately, as well as keep hitting.
right
would like to hear more about him. it seems like they have a ton of good outfielders but what would do with them? have heard a lot of good about Ranaudo too. we do have time to let a prospect season in the minors at SS
Lavarnway
MAN did he have an awesome year at AAA last year. half season but just silly numbers. OPS’d over a K with nearly 400 OBP. I’m still a believer in Tony Sanchez though. Wouldn’t want to buy too high on a guy like Lavarnway came out of nowhere just a bit only ~250 ABs at AAA
so was Doumit, but we put that square peg in the round hole!

a deal of hanrahan and marte for luebke would easily favor the padres in my opinion. granted, luebke was pitching in arguably the most well-known pitchers ballpark in the bigs. his splits at home in his career are 69 innings pitched, 3-5 record, 58 hits, 33 runs, 31 earned runs, 6 dingers, 20 walks, 4.04 era, and a 1.13 WHIP. now say if you translate that to the short portches in right field and the left field line at PNC, how does that affect his pitching line and season stats? yeah obviously PNC is somewhat considered a hitters ballpark with the deep left field and the notch. but i could see a little bit of inflation to his numbers at a slightly more hitter-friendly ballpark at PNC
Luebke's FIP & xFIP...
…were actually substantially lower away from Petco last year (2.70/2.68) then they were at Petco (3.16/3.37). He’s clearly not a product of that ballpark.
