Nate McLouth's Potential McReturn

I know that a lot of people groaned over seeing McLouth's name in the rumors yesterday, but I'd also like to think that a lot of of got a little twinge of excitment when we saw his name pop up.

Regardless, many people instantly became defensive saying this alludes to Jones being DFA'd since the two could probably put together similar years, if not Jones is better.

It seems to me though that this is more of a Derek Lee insurance policy. Let's be honest, once you get past Puljos and Fielder the first base market gets bleak rather quickly. I'd rather see the Pirates not do anything than sign another Overbay. (Though I admit, I thought Overbay was going to at least hold things together a bit better than he did.)

The Pirates have picked up Nick Evans, who's hit lefties pretty well, and have Garrett Jones, who as we all know can put a hurt to righties when he wants to.

I know a lot of us, if not most, HATE platoons, but honestly this seems like a decent one if anything. Sure, the defense is nothing to write home about, (Though they could possible shade Walker a few steps over to help since Barmes has pretty solid range going to his left.) but on paper they should hit well.

I know I'll get a lot of remarks about how Diaz and Jones didn't hit, but Evans is also six years younger than Diaz, and would appear to have some decent upside where you pretty much knew what you were getting with Diaz. Also, Jones could possibly hit better when he settles into one position, not worrying about two.

The point is, McLouth is probably being seen as a suitible lefty option on the bench, with the potential to bounce back if Presley stumbles.

Not the best plan out there, but not the worst. Just remember, with Derek Lee you're signing a player who's a lot closer to 40 than he appears, and you could very well get the Orioles rendition of Lee for the entire season.

I for one would rather see the platoon out there.

i don’t hate platoons and i don’t think most people here do either. and nate is a solid bet to be worse than overbay.

I usually get a ton of guff when I bring up platoons anywhere, so I always use a disclaimer

As for Nate, I don’t think we should pay him a ton, but if he can be had for what they paid Diaz for a year then I’d like to see it. I want to say that was like 2mil per year?

I don’t think he’ll be as awful as Overbay, and I don’t think he’d get the opporunity to be. He’s historically hit well at PNC (albeit that history is not very massive) and I think he’d be a better option off the bench than Xavier Paul.

Why waste $2M?

I would rather throw Gorkys out there as the 4th OF or use a Rule V guy than waste any money or a roster spot on McLouth.

by pskell02 on Dec 6, 2011 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think Gorkys is ready. Management hasn’t really mentioned him at all. Plus, like I said, McLouth gives you a guy familiar with the field who can play all three outfield positions and is a lefty off the bench.

If you go with Hernandez you have a mostly righty bench.

Neal isn’t stupid, he won’tget burnt on a guy he gave away.

i agree with johnnycuff

that most people here are fine with appropriate platoon usages. I’d not want to pay McLouth more than 1M or so to back up the OF, but we may need to go a bit higher just so it doesn’t look too bad. I think, too, that 2Mish is better spent elsewhere, and we can get McLouth later once the budget/roster situation gets clearer.

They say they have the money to spend. Isn’t my 2M so I can live with it. Don’t think he’ll comman much more, especially since he’s shown mutual interest in returning.

Not a "Potential" return to me

I am about 90% certain an announcement will be soon.

I agree. Seems like Neal’s locking him up today.

if so, I hope it's just a minor league deal

with a few incentive clauses and an invite to Spring Training

Sorry...

wasn’t around my computer last night. I as alluding to the fact that there wasn’t much reporting on the Pirates all day, which usually means Neal’s up to something during busy times.

Why would we hate the platoons?

They’re intended to maximize the productivity of two guys who by themselves wouldn’t be especially good. Nothing wrong with that.

Sorry, I'm new to BD for the most part, but many places I've tried to talk baseball I've been berated

for my belief in productive platoons.

Maybe to celebrate I'll have a McRib

It would probably provide about equal value as Nate…

The chicks all think Nate, Garrett, and Alex are hotties. I think NH might have a Chippendales’ poster promo plan for 2012.

He has captivating looks, that's for sure...

though I’ve heard rumors that Karstens throws a mean party.

I'm not so sure

The 12 year old look has worked well for Bieber recently.
