Pirates acquire Yamaico Navarro from Royals for Pounders and Goris
Unfamiliar with Navarro and Goris. Pounders seemed to be behind the other H.S. pitchers as he was not starting, but did put up good peripherals as a multi-inning reliever.
Comments
I thought Pounders had more value
But this is your backup UTIL INF, thats why Betemit was out
I liked
Pounders, but at the same time, he was nothing special. Probably not even a top 30 prospect, at least in my book.
Basically this can be surmised as “meh”

yea I understand
but I thought he was a little more shinier than fetching a util player like Navarro, I was thinking more of a lines of Aaron Pribanic and Goris would fetch a player like him.
I feel
like Pribanic is a penny while Pounders was too pennies, and instead of investing them in penny stock, we just traded them for a nickel or dime.

This is a writeup from Sox Prospects
From before this past season, before he was traded to KC:

I challenge someone
To read that write-up and not have Ronny Cedeno flashing in their head.

what gave it away lol
But the focus and effort is not always there defensively.

I thought the exact same thing when I read it.

Seems like a reasonable deal
Fills a need, and quite frankly, Pounders was a minor leagues reliever who was repeated Low A after struggling to stay healthy. I think he’s got a decent future, but the value probably evens out. I’ve never heard of this Goris fellow, but he seems like basically a lottery ticket at this point.
Based on the 2 minutes I spent reading what I found on Google while on the phone, I’m pleased. I think the guy has fills a better need, can back up at shortstop with average to above average defense

This is really interesting
Navarro was one of the two prospects included in the Mike Aviles trade from last summer. Over The Monster, the Red Sox SBN site, had this to say about his inclusion:
Really, it’s confusing why the Red Sox would give up a player like Yamaico Navarro in return. He’s shown flashes of brilliance in the minor leagues at times, though he’s looked overmatched at times in his initial exposure to Major League pitching. Kendal Volz, too, has shown potential given his at-times absurd peripherals.
The Red Sox could come out on top of this if neither Navarro or Volz prove to be capable of cutting it in the Major Leagues, but it seems just as likely that they’ve given up as much Major League talent as they’ve received, and have the greater possibility of really regretting the deal down the line.

Wait
a second. I thought this was some catcher.
If this is true (which it probably isn’t).
Has the tools to be a plus defender at shortstop and third base, also has some experience at second base. Sure glove, above-average arm, excellent fluidity.
We got ourselves a hell of a steal. He put up solid numbers offensively, just turned 24, and he’s obviously controlled for a while. If he is Ronny Cedeno, then declining the option makes sense. I’d trade Pounders and Goris for a few million dollars.

the better part is, we can take it slow with him. let him backup get some ABs, and if he excels then start him, if not, well we have Barmes, d’Arnaud and some others to fill in. Worst case scenario we lost Pounders in this deal, who at best, is a RP in the majors, not like we can’t find those as NRIs

Here's something interesting from Royals Review
Navarro could be the next Ben Zobrist (or the next Andy LaRoche). His walk and K rates (and power) weren’t that bad in the minors.
Not actually affiliated with whygavs.
by WHYG Zane Smith on Dec 7, 2011 11:24 PM EST reply actions
Ya
I like this guy alot. He reminds me of Stephen Drew, although Zobrist may be more appropriate. Of course, that’s if alot goes right, but I’d rather have those dice to roll than Pounders and Goris.

Sorry to play the role of Debby
But there have been some recent questions about his work ethic as well http://www.kffl.com/article.php/128011/515
But apparently the tools are there and solid, plus the defense rates as above average currently, with plus potential, and some power as well. I’m pleased

Here’s how BA described him last summer:
“Navarro controls the strike zone reasonably well and has tremendous bat speed, so he has the ability to hit for solid average with as many as 15-20 homers per season. His strong arm is his best defensive tool, and he also shows some quickness and soft hands. His effort and conditioning waver at times, though he has gotten more consistent in those regards in recent seasons.”
Holy
frik. That’s an above-average SS potentially with 6 years of control we just got for Brooks Pounders and some other dude named Goris.
The dude is young too. As in he just turned 24 young. As in younger by 8 months than Pedro. As in a full year younger than McCuthen.
No reason this guy can’t become Stephen Drew with a decent bit of luck, but he was basically free.

…a triple reverse flea flicker on fourth and long. If it works, it could be awesome. lol
haha honestly, if we can score say DLee, Pena or Ike D and get another solid pitcher, we may be in serious business this year

what happens with Pujols and Fielder. Both leave, I agree. One or both come back, maybe not so much.

He sounds good and I like the trade at first, second and third glance. But you have to wonder why the Red Sox and Royals would be so willing to deal him. He could be Josh Rodriguez.
Rob Neyer
Though he does call our former player “Pounder.”

He also refers to "Pounder" as
“organization depth”. Definitely way too early to pass that kind of judgement on him.

Too early, yes.
“Way” too early? No, IMO.
As pointed out elsewhere, his injury and repetition of a level with so-so results don’t help his case any.
That said, I’m shedding no tears here. Gotta give to get, after all.

As
a 20 year old at Low A ball, already in the bullpen, with an average fastball, and little projection left

So leave off that part of the sentence.

Rings pretty true, no?
I’m not slagging Pounders, by any means.
But as I said, I’m not really bummed out by his being picked, either.

From Neyer's article
“But baseball men love the Rule 5 draft because it gives them a chance to scout. And damn it all if baseball men don’t love to scout.”
Sound like anyone we know around here?
Here's a Sons of Sam Horn thread
It spans his last couple of years in Boston’s system.

Seems they were pretty high on him.

my numbers aren't so rosy
His hitting isn’t totally bad, in the Ronnie Cedeno range. His MLEs (from THT Forecasts) the past two years were 241/309/388 307 wOBA & 245/309/364 299 wOBA.
It’s the defense where the numbers become excretory. I have fielding runs of -17, +1, -12, -17. That’s -11 runs/150 G only at SS 2005-2011. 2007 ranked 24th in FRAA in Low A, 29th in 2007 AFL, 23rd in 2010 AA.
SS range at his level, in qualifying seasons, ranked 17, 18, 19, 25 (of 30) Poor
Hands, 12, 15, 18, 27 Fair
DPs started 14, 20, 24 Poor
DPs pivoted 1, 10, 10, 23 Good
DP pivots appears to be only above average for his level tool, as it was said that a strong arm was his asset. Average hands at best, poor range.
