Don't go getting those Ike Davis hopes up
"It doesn’t make sense to trade [Davis]," a Mets official said. "But you listen. What if the Marlins decide they really want a first baseman because they aren’t getting [Albert] Pujols? We could say, ‘OK, give us Mike Stanton to play right field,’ and we could then move [Lucas] Duda to first base."
The article notes that such a trade has not been proposed, but it gives a window into the kind of return the Mets would be looking for when dealing Davis. Somehow I doubt Marte and Lincoln would be enough. You're looking into Cutch-Tabata-Cole-Taillon cost if they'd want Mike Stanton from the Marlins.

We could say, ‘OK, give us Mike Stanton to play right field’
And the Marlins could say, “That’s some great shit you’re smoking.”
MLBTR is great, but I think it’s starting to serve too much as a sounding board for agents and FO types who float rumors as a negotiating tactic. Has anybody else noticed how often MLBTR will post one rumor, then post the opposite within an hour or so? Like today:
8:13am: “Yankees Offer Kuroda $12MM.”
8:55am: “Yankees Haven’t Made An Offer to Hiroki Kuroda.”
It’s getting out of control.
Occupy MLB! Down with Seligula!
And while I like Davis
He’s not worth giving up Mike Stanton for the little bit of improvement he gives you over Gaby Sanchez.
It is getting ridiculous...
I sent that bit about Kuroda to Yankee fans I know and now look an idiot. And Stanton for Davis is hilarious.

I think the fact
that Stanton would be an overpay is kinda the point. What the mystery exec was saying is that it never hurts to listen (which is why it was not news that the Pirates would be willing to listen to offers on Cutch). If you get blown away by an offer, you take it. If Tampa called us up and said they’d give us Longoria for Pedro, we would take it, that doesn’t mean that it would be offered. That’s how I read the Mets exec’s comments. If Miami offered Stanton they’d take it, but that doesn’t mean that the Marlins would actually be willing to do it.

Which it says
by saying that’s not a real trade offer.
It’s akin to Nefatli Feliz for Joel Hanrahan.

I mean
the name of the site is MLB trade rumors. I think it’s doing exactly what it intends to do.

nobody gets hurt...
until KLaw makes a comment about a friend of a friend of a relative of a friend saw a passport of someone that said he was older than reported….twice removed.

Who got hurt? Jose’s still a millionaire and the people who believe Jose’s age still believe it and those who don’t believe it don’t. If his contract was revoked because of KLaw’s chat, then I could see your point. Only a tiny segment of baseball fans have heard of Jose Tabata, and only a tiny segment of that tiny segment are aware of questions about his age.
"Who got hurt?"
Possibly Tabata’s reputation, if you think about it.
When things get repeated enough, true or not, they become “fact,” accepted by the masses.
People get hurt by bad reps / incorrect public perception alla time.

It takes something on a Sandusky-esque level to harm someone’s reputation in the reality-show world in which we live. “Shocking” news comes, goes and is quickly forgotten.
Many people doubt Albert Pujols’ DOB and yet he has a sterling reputation. Players such as Santiago Casilla pitch under different identities and face no real repercussions. I’ve seen him pitch and he was not heckled at all. Very few fans keep up with this stuff.
Tabata
is not Pujols.
My point stands – look at Pedro’s reputation for being “lazy,” even though every published and quoted report says otherwise.
Just one example – I’m sure you can think of many, many others.
Yes, in the Grand Scheme of things, this is pretty minor. I’m just pointing out that people get branded unfairly, and it happens more often than you think about.

agree to disagree
I didn’t know Pedro had a reputation for being lazy (I don’t live anywhere near Pittsburgh, so maybe it’s on talk radio). I know there are concerns about his conditioning, but those stem from comments by Huntington. And some fans were bothered by his actions following the draft and his decision to skip winter ball, moves which could lead reasonable people to question his desire.
But, yes, I do understand your larger point that some well-known people get branded unfairly on the Internet — and in the traditional media. They used to call it the price of fame, but the Internet and reality TV have lowered the bar for fame and lessened the monetary rewards for some who achieve it.
in fairness
that really is the masses’ problem. (And the player’s, to some extent, since he can put out positive spin to counter it)
I would argue...
there would be solid grounds, if the Pirates felt shorted, to have the contract voided.
so hypothetically…when his millions go away, he is harmed.
by insane_sanity on Dec 9, 2011 10:13 PM EST up reply actions
true..
But the contract could only be voided if the Pirates had proof that Tabata lied about his age. It wouldn’t be voided because Keith Law answered a chat question. Law provided his audience with the reason why he chooses not to believe Tabata’s listed age. His audience can decide whether it’s BS or not. The third-hand evidence isn’t solid enough to convince me, but I don’t think Law harmed Tabata. The rumor is already out there, not that many people care and Tabata will get paid.
lol wow
So Perrotto completely made up that rumor of the Pirates said Marte and Lincoln was too high of a price for Ike???
And that Mets official is high, If I was a GM and had Mike Stanton, honestly I would not trade him for anybody in the game. He should be untouchable and even considered UN-talkable in any trade talks for at least the next couple years.
Haha,
I read this as “he is a bit fatter person since Bob Nutting fired his ass”
. . . except for his wallet.

its all talk, really... of course Davis could be dealt, and less than a Stanton in return
everyone thought it would take $100MM to sign CJ Wilson, or that Pujols would give a hometown discount to the Cards.
rumors are rumors, wether its about Prince Fielder or Lindsey Lohan
Speaking of Lohan
I’m dreading/giddy about seeing her spread in Playboy. She looks rough in most of her recent photos but was once real good looking. See how the blow affected her body in a few days.
As for the talk of Davis for Stanton, hahahaahahah.
IIRC, Lohan did *two* shoots for Playboy
She was bare naked in the first shoot, but those pix were vetoed by Hefner.
In the second shoot, she was only partially nude… that can’t be a good sign, can it?
After seeing the first spread, did Hef say “For cryin’ out loud, that’s disgusting! Put something on, will you?”
:( :( :(
and doesn't care
as long as he wakes up next to a blonde bombshell every morning….
and if that’s the case…I wish I didn’t know where I was anymore, either!

at 105 years old next to a 25 year old nude model...
kinda cruel to him, and little Hef, for that matter
Reminds me of the old joke...
a 90 year old man is about to marry a 24 year old girl.
His best friend, worried about the old man’s health and his ability to “perform” on his wedding night, says, “But what about the possibility of death from the physical exertion?”
The old man replies, “Well, if she dies, I’ll just hafta find me another wife!”

If the Mets official had said
“We’re ready to move Ike and a couple of low upside double A guys in exchange would probably work”, he should/would get fired.
Just to clarify...
this
You’re looking into Cutch-Tabata-Cole-Taillon cost if they’d want Mike Stanton from the Marlins.
wasn’t meant to suggest that Stanton is equal in value to that entire package was it? I can’t imagine that’s what you really meant, but I paused for a second when I saw Tabata included in that group because he doesn’t typically get included in that “untouchable” category like the other three. I’m almost positive you were just saying Stanton is as valuable as those four players individually but I just wanted to make sure…
I just meant that..
…if the Mets were to want Mike Stanton to trade Ike Davis to the Marlins, they’d probably ask for one of those 4 from the Bucs if they wanted him.
Tabata isn’t a charter “untouchable”, but given that he’s scratched about >< that much of his potential and is signed to crazy good contract, I think Huntington would have to be blown away to move him and Ike Davis wouldn’t quite cut it.
Obviously Cole & Taillon are the two untouchables down on the farm.
As for Cutch, I think he’s an untouchable right now, but that might begin to change if he’s halfway through his arb years and still shows no inclination to sign a deal buying out a couple free agent seasons.
Jose Tabata is the truth
The following is a list of everything Darren McFadden is bad at: 1) Giving birth. End of list.
Jose might be the truth, but the truth is I’d deal him for Ike in a heartbeat. Mets would never do it, though.
I would approve a Tabata for Davis swap
but age questions and injury-proneness will not let that happen.
Well
at the Mets are looking for high upside guy, and Tabata doesn’t have the upside Marte has at this point in my opinion.

There is a better chance that Ike Turner
will play 1B for the Bucs before Ike Davis ever does.
"Don Mossi was the complete five-tool ugly player. He could run ugly, hit ugly, throw ugly, field ugly and ugly for power.
Ha!
.
But srsly-
R.I.P. Ike (a fantastic musician)

I think statements like
“What if the Marlins decide they really want a first baseman because they aren’t getting [Albert] Pujols? We could say, ‘OK, give us Mike Stanton to play right field,’ and we could then move [Lucas] Duda to first base.”
are more exaggeration for effect. It’s kinda like saying it’s gonna take a ton to get him, but not saying it. When discussion comes up about a theoretical trade of Cutch, one of the statements usually made is that he is tradeable if someone massively overpaid. Same thing. This is one of the reasons I dislike Twitter, etc. Those kinds of sarcastic and tongue in cheek comments don’t come across very well online. People seem to take stuuf like that as fact or way too seriously when it’s not meant to be.
