Pirates Send Andrew Lambo, Jeff Locke, Eight Others To Minors
The Pirates have sent ten players to the minors: Andrew Lambo, Chase D'Arnaud and Brian Friday have all been sent to minor-league camp, and all three will presumably be at Indianapolis. Tony Watson, Danny Moskos, Gorkys Hernandez and Alex Presley have all been sent to Indianapolis. Aaron Thompson, Ramon Aguero and Jeff Locke head to Altoona.
None of these players were expected to make the major-league team - Watson, Moskos and Thompson might theoretically have been competing for a lefty bullpen role before the acquisition of Joe Beimel, but not anymore. The only noteworthy assignment here is Locke to Altoona. Locke was brilliant down the stretch for the Curve last year, but he only had 57 innings at Class AA, so the Pirates might have thought it was best not to rush him, especially given the crowded rotation picture at Indianapolis. Jenifer Langosch does note that despite being assigned to Altoona, however, it's still possible that Locke could begin the year at AAA. She also reports that it's unclear whether Watson will start or relieve this year.

In other news . . .
JMac will be skipping a turn as a precaution. If that’s all that comes out of tweaking his side, fine.

off topic
but the game today is like watching a rerun of a game from last year’s season…
It’s one of those rare days when they’re hitting ok (11 hits in 5 inn), but finding ways to make outs and not capitalize – 2 runs so far.
Correia not too bad, bar the 4th where he got bombed, and couldnt seem to stop the bleeding!
Beimel.......
allows a homer to his first batter faced.

beware the 4th inning
when lineups turn over for a second time around.
As for the photo – is that Locke? Did the Braves draft him out sixth grade? He looks like he ought to be waiting for his voice to change. I’ll tell you though, I loved watching him pitch the one opportunity I’ve had. He was lights out that night in Portland, in front of all his new hampster homies.
Just what I was thinking.
He looks like he ought to be waiting for his voice to change
Or worrying about a pimple on Prom night.

Fairly obvious moves here. Lambo and D’arnaud weren’t brilliant in 2010, but the talent was there for the 3A promotion. Gorkys to Indy is at least defensible.
The organizations top hitting prospects were promoted. Who might get the squeeze is Josh Harrison, Hague, Jordy Mercer, and Kris Watts. I like Harrison the best. The other 3 were OK.

Watson...
I have to believe that Watson starts in the bullpen. He or Moskos will have a good change of making the team should Beimel get moved at the deadline.
fwiw
I hope he starts… he may not last in that role, but he did very very well as a starter in AA, and based on starter > reliever, I hope he gets a shot. Lincoln, Morris, Owens are locks to start, leaving 2 spots. The legit contenders are Wilson/Valdez/Burres, besides Watson, and I’d rather have Watson start over all except Wilson (maybe).
I think Wilson should be there but there's a good chance he's in Altoona...
and I think Burress will be there but you have a point. Crotta may be used there as well. I see him as having the same value as Watson. Though I do see them both as relievers.
Wilson in Altoona
Why do you say there’s a good chance of that? He spent all last year there and did very well. Command is a concern, but sending him back to AA won’t help his command.
Only because...
anytime I heard Huntington speak of who will be in Indy to start the year Wilson’s name never comes up. I agree with you, I believe he should be in Indy. Hopefully he will.
Lambo
He is our future RF….Now that would be a very young agressive outfield with Tabata and Cutch…….
I feel better now that you said that...
I had penciled him in in Right on my charts due to his relative slowness and the size of LF in PNC. We could sorely use a power-hitting corner OF and if he does well, I don’t think either Jones or Diaz will stand in his way.
"Who is John Galt?"
mark this down; 2012- RF platoon of Lambo and Marte after the allstar break
unless one of them is traded in a larger deal, natch

I may be in a minority here
but I am one guy that isn’t high on Marte. We have a light hitting leadoff type already in LF in Tabata, who has more power. I’m hoping that Lambo finally hits his stride this year and becomes the player that everyone believed him to be when he was drafted. IMO, the team will be in a bad spot if Marte is getting a sniff at the starting position in RF with Tabata still on the team.
But hey, thats just me. If Lambo fails, I hope to be eating my words come mid-season 2012 and Marte comes up and shines.
I hope Marte is trade bait asap!
although I recognize that wont happen unless the team performs, since we wont be trading prospects for established players…

Trade bait
I remember the catcher situation with the
Twins. They traded Wilson Ramos for a
mediocrity in Matt Capps, when they might have been better served making Ramos the backup catcher, particularly with Mauer’s health not being perfect.
Now, with the Pirates. If they have a stacked outfield (huge “if”, obviously), does it make more sense to trade Marte for veteran depth, or would you make him a quality 4th outfielder in 2013-14 and starting CF in 2015-18?

Center field
Even if McCutchen was kept through the 2015 season, Marte could come up in June 2013 and be the starting CF from 2016 to 2019, under the current eligibility rules.
Granted, the entire years of control system could be different by 2019 (whether it be Super 2 or whatever).
by Adam Reynolds on Mar 15, 2011 2:59 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
well, two things
1. i m hoping Cutch can be here till about 2017
2. i have doubts about Marte’s ability to put it together, hence trade him while he’s hot… ofc, if he can replicate 85% of Cutch’s ability, then it’d be a mistake…
I hope Cutch is here longer too, but if 2015 is the end, they’ve got to prepare for life with out Cutch, and Starling could be a part of that.

I think Marte's more of a 2013 arrival.
Because he’s still raw at the plate, I’d give him the full season at both Double-A and Triple-A.
By then, a lot will change in the organization, so theres not much point planning as far as where Marte would fit on the major league roster.
by Adam Reynolds on Mar 15, 2011 2:21 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
In addition to his unrefined approach, Marte is in the year+ recovery window for hamate surgery (May ’10), which is generally believed to have a considerable effect on power. While opinions differ on his power potential, we should have a somewhat better picture after this season. If he develops even average to above avg power, that greatly changes his value.
If Marte is up in 2012
He won’t be platooning. He’ll be leading off and playing everyday while Tabata is playing center field for the Braves.
Moskos
Moskos got off to a good start early in the exhibition season, and seemed to falter lately.
However, I think there is still hope.
It would be great for that guy to get it together and help us from the left side.
I’d love to see him finally make it after being a #1.
