Pirates 2011 Minor League Spring Training Roster

Here's the entire minor league camp roster that the Pirates provide at Pirate City. I corrected a few mistakes with names and pitcher handedness, but there may be others. I have no idea what's going on with Jesus Brito, but I'll ask tomorrow.

Teenage Latin players, for those of you who are curious about interesting young players who might be playing stateside this year: Yhonathan Barrios, Orlando Castro, Exicardo Cayones, Willy Garcia, Alen Hanson, Luis Heredia, Jimmy Hernandez, Yhonathan Herrand, Diomedes Mateo (anyone know who this guy is?), Jose Ozuna, Gregory Polanco, Cristopher Richardson, Joely Rodriguez, Luis Urena.

UPDATE: Tim has some notes on some of these guys, as well as a few others.

Also, there was some question about whether Gerardo Alvarez would play or coach this year. Judging from workouts today (Alvarez had his name on his jersey, unlike players and like coaches) and from his absence from the roster, he appears to be a coach.

Mateo certainly doesn’t look like a RHP on his Facebook page!

On the roster they have him listed as an RHP, but also give him an asterisk to indicate that he’s left-handed. I’ll change this to make him a lefty.

It’s only natural that any document that lists Jesus Brito as a RHP does need some editing.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s trying the mound. They’ve done this several times as a last attempt to make something of a prospect who’s floundering.

One way to tell, if you can locate him at Pirate City, is the pants. Pitchers wear white pants, position players light gray.

Right. I wondered about that too. I didn’t see him anywhere today.

I’ve seen him. He has a strong arm.

Just talked to stark. Brito is now a pitcher.

Huh

Would be a nice little story if he makes it, even just to the upper minors.

Wouldn’t it be cool if we found out Brian Bixler was also being moved to pitcher by whatever-the-hell team he’s with now?

.391/.500/.739 Only 2 strikeouts in 23 AB! Bixler is a monster.

Thanks for posting this, Charlie.

The most interesting part of this is always which guys they’ve brought to camp from the foreign leagues. The noteworthy guys are probably Garcia, Herrand, Hanson, Ozuna and Urena. It’s very hard to tell, though, because performance with players so young says almost nothing just yet.

There are some cool names on these guys.

It’s a shame Ericdavis Marquez was released last week.

Wilson Lee and Jackson Lodge

Are also teenage international players. Charlie pointed out the Latin guys in the post, but they’re both out of Australia. They both had birthdays in December. Lee is now 19 and Lodge just turned 17.

by ElDuce on Mar 16, 2011 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

Right. The reason I focused on the Latin guys was because the release of the minor-league camp roster is our first chance to find out which players are being called up (or are skipping) the DSL and VSL. I guess the same is theoretically true of the Australian guys, but there’s generally the assumption that they’ll be here relatively quickly after signing, whereas it might take a couple years in the case of the Latin players.

There’s also Neverauskas and Lukashevich (who appear to be friends, judging from what I saw today).

Not hard to figure. They might as well be the only two earth men on Mars.

I wrote a brief thing about Lee back when the news of his signing first broke.

Diomedes Mateo (anyone know who this guy is?)

He was pretty buddy-buddy with Odysseus. Probably #2 or 3 on the Achaean depth chart – I don’t know why he gets overlooked so much.

by JRoth95 on Mar 17, 2011 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

Sure you're not thinking of Lesser Ajax?

I thought the Big D made it home safely. But maybe I’m misremembering.

by JRoth95 on Mar 18, 2011 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

He was a #2 caliber slayer

But would have been a #1 for anybody but the team he was on.

I believe he goes by the name “Cliff Lee” these days.
