Maybe Dave Littlefield Was More Incompetent Than We Thought

How can that be?, you ask. From a BA Q/A ranking the top players from the loaded 2005 draft:

7. Andrew McCutchen
Management wanted a college product but Pirates scouts fought for McCutchen at No. 11

So one of the few sensible things Littlefield ever did, he had to be dragged into. This also serves as a reminder that the Pirates' scouts may not have been as universally bad as some people suppose.* They had morons on their side.

*Before the old "they still have all the same scouts" myth starts up again, I'll point out here that the media guides show the scouting staff has had heavy turnover since NH took over. Hopefully they kept the guys who wanted McCutchen.
