Garrett Olson pitched 1.1 innings against the Twins today. I've been skeptical about Olson and still doubt that he will be with the team the whole season, but his stuff looked reasonably good today. He gave up one hit on a ball that Jose Tabata didn't play very well, but overall showed a good breaking ball and fastball and pretty much worked down in the zone. I would assume that he is guaranteed to make the team now. If he pitches well, he could stick with the team when Joe Beimel comes back.
Michael Crotta worked an inning and gave up a run on a bloop double down the left field line after walking a batter. Crotta worked down in the zone and I have to think his performance this spring is going to win him a roster spot. Chris Resop worked an inning and the most notable thing to me is how easy his delivery is. He had trouble locating his off-speed stuff, but otherwise looked good. Anthony Claggett, one of several minor leaguers to appear in the game, worked the ninth and gave up two runs and took the loss. Chris Leroux, who is in the running for a bullpen job along with Crotta, did not pitch.
I didn't see much of Jeff Karstens' work, but it was the effective Karstens, getting ahead of hitters. He doesn't have dominant stuff, but he can be effective at times. He should get a start if James McDonald isn't ready, but let's hope he is the long man and doesn't have to make more than a few starts this year. By July those spare starts are going to go to Rudy Owens or Bryan Morris or both, I would imagine.
Both Steve Pearce and Josh Rodriguez (at third) made some solid plays in the field, and I really think Pearce is going to force the coaches to find a way to get him at bats. He looked very good at the plate. Jordy Mercer and Brian Friday got some late inning work. Starling Marte struck out in an at-bat late in the game and looked a little over-matched. He also misplayed a ball to deep center in the ninth that effectively cost the Bucs the game.
In other news, Jim Negrych was with the AA club today. Scott McCauley, the Indianapolis broadcaster, has said Negrych was really ticked when he was sent down last year, and Cory Giger is reporting that Negrych has a deal to be released if he isn't with the AAA team. I don't know where there is a spot for him, so he could be released.
Update: Here is a Q&A that Cory Giger did with Negrych on Monday discussing his situation.
