Pirates Drop Seven Minor Leaguers

The Pirates have released minor-leaguers Adenson Chourio, Christian Colonel, Casey Erickson, Pat Irvine, Gerlis Rodriguez, Jose Solano and Mike Williams. Of those, the only one that's mildly surprising is Erickson, who was acquired in the Eric Hinske deal two years ago has put up good numbers in relief in each of the last two seasons, albeit at levels he was too old for. Chourio got about 200 at bats between West Virginia and Bradenton last year and didn't do much with them. Colonel was acquired this offseason, presumably to back up at the corners at somewhere around the Class AA level, but apparently that won't work out. Williams pitched for West Virginia last year and was unimpressive.

And picked up Tim Wood

RHP with a 1.7+ WHIP in 26 appearances last year. I smell Hayden Penn again.

And his minor league numbers are just as sucktastic.

If he’s going on the 25 man…that’s getting close to a fireable offense for a GM ;

I’d rather see Craig Hansen there.

Wood does have good stuff.

Much better than Penn’s. Mid-90s FB and a high-80s slider. As a developmental project, there’s some upside there.

Looks like Wood has an option

Rostered in November 2008
Optioned in 2009 and 2010
outrighted off the roster last October – and then became a minor league free agent

signed to a minor league deal with the Nats in December.

This has to be a minor league deal.

I wanna believe, honestly, I do....

Hurdle looks and acts like the kind of skipper the Buccos need in the dugout-a guy who’s been to the fall classic and has what Russell definitely lacked-fire in the belly. It looks like we also have some better pitching and we have a core of good hitters who can produce some offense. After last season’s abyssmal performance we’ve got nowhere to go but up. Hopefully I won’t eat these words in August. I hope 18 years of crap is about to end and I’ll be very happy if we can manage to go .500 for the season. Please God, have mercy on Pittsburgh! Haven’t we suffered long enough? Pick up your pride, Pirates. It’s time for you to channel the stuff of Pirate legends like Clemente, Mazeroski, Stargell, Parker, Tekulve, Drabek, Bonds and Candelaria. Let’s go, Buccos-show us what you’ve got!
