The Pirates have cut Tony Sanchez, Eric Fryer, Donnie Veal and Cesar Valdez, sending them to minor-league camp. None of these guys were expected to make the team - Sanchez and Fryer are catchers, who are always nice to have at the beginning of major-league camp because there are so many pitchers there. Veal is injured. Valdez, who was acquired in the Zach Duke trade, actually pitched a bit in the majors last year, so I'm not sure why they cut him so early, but until we hear otherwise, I'm not sure we should read anything into it. He'll probably be at Indianapolis this year. UPDATE: Clint Hurdle explains what happened with Valdez: "He has shown that he can get swings and misses in Spring Training games, but we want to see the velocity get back. We want to see the sinker and fastball."
