Bucs just might sport Wood
Pirates, Other Teams Pursuing Brandon Wood
via @MLBTradeRumors
My thoughts are this...he's never seen significant ABs over a full season in the MLB. He's got about 450 PAs stretched out over 5 seasons. We gave Andy Laroche a shot so we're the de facto destination for this kid, no? Cedeno certainly isn't blocking anyone. My favorite thing about the move is it shows underachievers like Cedeno that, if they don't pull their head out of their orifice, they won't get playing time because the FO isn't afraid to get creative and bring other options in.
Maybe Hurdle can shorten up his swing and iron a few kinks out? Even if his bat responds, we're likely to have a historically bad defensive infield if he sees significant playing time ... Left to right, Pedro, Wood, Walker, Overbay with some Jones? OMG.
Also, shameless plug ... I've started freelancing for an interesting (at least to me) project... a documentary film/website re: the bank bailouts - www.usabailout.com ... my first article is here if you'd like to give it a glance.
It's political so use caution. Charlie - if mentioning outside work is a no-no, I apologize and will gladly edit the post. Not sure of the standards there.

it took me a second to convince myself that

is this for real?
gosh, that twitter account just looks fake, but i suppose its real. At least, in the articles, he sounds like an educated person, even if a moron wrt understanding baseball. The twitter account is crazy stupid- the messages on it, i mean.

Well...
I thought it was safe to say it’s at least plausible that he’d get 1 start there this year, no? I agree, it’s a pretty bad idea but it’d probably happen a fair amount if we a) trade Overbay at the deadline or b) if Overbay gets hurt and they start Diaz against a lefty.
On another topic, I never noticed how quiet it is here at BD in the mornings until I got the ax at work the other day. Either I’m one of the only unemployed folks on here or I’m just the only jobless guy who still wakes up early.

Thanks WoW
I was recruiting accountants and finance professionals …. sales and headhunting really. A pretty scummy industry, if you ask me so it could have been worse to lose my job. I was absolutely miserable there but I stuck it out because we got this recession on, right?
I’ve been looking at freelance writing for a few different outlets … the one mentioned above and others. I’m hopeful I can find some enjoyable work this time around…. I hear stress and depression kills.

It’s not easy… Been going through it myself. Got called this AM only to be told work won’t start for another few weeks to a month. 4 months on unemployment checks really causes financial hardship. Hopefully, you can get something soon and not go through this experience… Good luck!

Hey Krid… thanks for your thoughts. I’m probably eventually grad school bound so the timing could be worse. Unemployment will be a nearly 300% pay cut so that’s scary but I’m finding there’s a lot of fat I can cut from my expenses…i.e. $200 iPhone bill for a piece of tech garbage that drops more calls than it holds.
4 months does sound like a long time to sit around in my boxers. I’ve been active and already had 3 phone interviews since getting the ax Tuesday but I don’t really want to jump at the first thing either.
Sorry to hear you’ve had a rough run. Things are tough on everyone but the very top right now.

I would imagine that it would be
Wood, Ronny, Walker, and Pedro, with Overbay down the road, but that’s just me. Is there some reason he played SO awfully last year? Did he have a lingering injury? Is we better now? Answers, you people, I need answers!
I hear Wood's problem has been
a long, kinky swing and poor pitch recognition that might be due to playing in a lot of thin air environments were breaking balls just don’t break as well.
If you’ve got lots of time on your hands (like I do now) you can look through this for a read on what Angels fans think his problems are.

even if wood isnt a good hitter
if he has a decent glove, i’d take a shot at him if i were NH. SS defense has to improve. i’d have no problems sending rodriguez back to… whatever team he came from.
I don’t think Wood’s ever going to overcome his issues with contact. As such, I’d be disappointed if we brought him in, particularly if we traded something useful for the right to do so.
For the sake of argument . . .
What if they do acquire him? Does he just replace Josh Rodriguez? Or does he become the starting SS, which would be a big stretch defensively?
You're entitled to your own opinions. You're not entitled to your own facts.
I hope they don't claim him...
or acquire him unless they’re committed to starting him until he’s amassed about 300 ABs. What’s the sense of taking a look at a kid who’s problem may have been he’s been jerked around and forced in to a failing approach unless you’re willing to give him an extended look after retooling that approach?
by RetireNutting on Apr 21, 2011 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions
rodriguez would go back to CLE
is my guess, unless the angels have a burning desire for ronny cedeno.
Supposedly...
Kevin Long , Yankees hitting coach, told Wood Scoscia’s really screwed up his swing and he ought to forget everything he’s been taught the last 3 years. Wood worked out with Long over the offseason and, the word is, he’s got a completely new approach just now. You never know … the Twins really screwed with David Ortiz’s approach and tried to push him in to becoming an opposite field hitter… once he unlearned the approach he was taught he really took off. Not saying this would happen for Wood …. just saying we’ve got little to lose as long as we don’t trade a Gorkys or better for him.
Better question… who in the minors would you guys part with for Wood?
I’ll start with Matt McSwain.

I expect you’d be looking at an upper-level pitcher, maybe Justin Wilson. Not sure I’d be thrilled.

by BurgherKing on Apr 21, 2011 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Wood worked out with Long over the offseason and, the word is, he’s got a completely new approach just now.
That would be more comforting if it had shown any sign of improving his productivity. 8 Ks in 15 PA with the Angels this year.
You never know … the Twins really screwed with David Ortiz’s approach and tried to push him in to becoming an opposite field hitter… once he unlearned the approach he was taught he really took off.
Regardless of what the Twins tried to do to Ortiz, he had enough talent that he was productive in spite of their interference. 120 OPS+ in his last season in Minnesota.
It’s not impossible that Wood will turn things around, but I don’t see any reason to expect him to do so.
I get where you're coming from...Ortiz is a bad comp.
i wouldn’t see getting wood as any certainty of shoring up SS for the Bucs … but there’s at least a grain of potential that it could pay off. It’s all about the risk involved…. is it worth letting go of Rodriguez and trading Diego Moreno? I’d take that risk.

low risk with potential for high reward
That’s what we can AFFORD. The problem is that, as our 25- and 40-man become more filled with talent, the potential cost (dropping a player off the 40 or players running out of options) increases. When we didn’t have jack for talent…we’d give this a shot! Now, the decisions become much harder.
I think Hurdle and his hitting coach need to sit down and watch a shitload of video on Wood (and NO, I don’t mean porn….). If they think there is something there they feel can be fixed…I’d look to acquire him — he is only 26. I do not advocate overpaying — this is a .168 hitter that is out of options.
I’m not familiar with his defense, and especially not at SS. If they could fix his bat enough to give us a .250 guy with 15-20 HR (with 150+ Ks)…would that be sufficient to replace Ronny? Are the gloves a wash, or is Ronny a better defender — the bat would have to be fixed to make up for the glove.
It really comes down to if the baseball guys (not saber guys) feel he can be fixed. We know the numbers aren’t good, and don’t bode well for him — in that instance, the baseball guys have to feel they can formulate a plan to fix this kid’s bat and make him offensively productive. (And I am aware that Jesus is not on our coaching staff…Wood may need a miracle.)

Deadline to make a waiver claim is noon today, so if that hasn’t been done already…

If NH relies on saber as much as I think he does…I don’t think he’ll claim him.
What I’m saying is that he has people in the organization that know hitting more than he does (now if he’ll admit that to himself…I’m not too sure).
There is one thing that Wood brings that we have almost 0 of — power potential. Outside Alvarez, we have none. Can we tap the potential? Maybe not. But if the cost is minimal (as I said, do NOT overpay)…what would be wrong with claiming him?

Ronny’s the better SS defender, on the whole. Wood’s pretty fringy for short.
Yeah, isn’t Wood a little stiff for SS?

The guy has raked in minors
and stunk in MLB.
It could be a head case type of thing, AAA isn’t the majors but it isn’t high school pitching either.
S Rodriguez has done OK for TB and Wood dwarfed his numbers for most part in minors, a change of scenery seems to make a decent risk/reward scererio.
He’s only 26 and we have no SS in the system truly, D nard isn’t hitting particularly well again and Holt is a couple years away. Cedeno is putrid too.
Give up Alderson or Gorkys, a .250 hitter with no power when you have cutch and Tabata already is pretty much a spare part. Trade a failing OF prospect for a failing SS prospect, it makes to much sense for FO to consider it.
Just my humble opinion.

For what it's worth...
I had a brief conversation with an Angels blogger and he said Wood’s about the easiest guy to like you’ll find on a major or minor league roster. Very respectful, approachable, humble, etc. And work ethic never seemed to be the problem.

I'm not
going to give up Alderson (at 22 yrs old) or Gorkys (a plus defender; 4th OF type guy) for a guy who hasn’t hit, and is a worse glove than Cedeno at SS.
They designated him, and his “prospect” status has worn off…AND he’s out of options — I wouldn’t give up much at all…a couple of bats or something.

Fangraphs on Wood
I still think we ought to take a shot, despite resident expert opinion from Charlie and Vlad against the idea. Rodriguez has a relatively low ceiling and a useful floor. Wood is a high ceiling, cellar floor type guy. We’ve got lots of middle infield types who’ve got Rodriguez’s ceiling/floor profile and none with Wood’s.
I won’t be upset if we don’t claim him … I won’t be upset if we do.
i think i said this somewhere else too
but given NH’s track record, I’d be surprised if Wood got past us, esp if he went on waivers. They may not want to trade anything of value for him, but he’s likely to get a shot if he’s free.
by BurgherKing on Apr 22, 2011 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions
Well, nuts.
On the bright side, when I hate a move with this kind of “fire of a thousand suns” intensity, it usually turns out great for us.
So maybe I can reverse jinx it.
take a chance, not like we're going to the playoffs
Career .284 hitter in the minors with 161 homeruns.
Plus it isn’t that much of a risk, Ronny Cedeno is a below average SS. Rodriguez, Ciraco, & Chase could duplicate his weak production. Wood is a kid that if he gets it together could be a power hitting SS, which in the Pirates situation you have to take a chance on him. Say we don’t claim him and he lives up to his potential….it will be yet another sad moment for the franchise. Lets GO BUCS!!!
gotta look deeper than that .284
cedeno hit much better than that in AAA. clement has raked in AAA. wood has had 4 plus years of opportunity to prove himself with the Angels and he’s actually gotten worse.
now either his mechanics are screwed up, the league already has his number, or he was never that good to begin with.
most would probably say the latter.
by white angus on Apr 22, 2011 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Hmmm
1.) Can Wood play SS? The Angels moved him off SS…is it because they had better options, is it because he couldn’t play there, or both? If he’s not a SS….how is he going to help us?
2.) Is he better than the 40th guy on our 40-man?
3.) Are we willing to lose J. Rodriguez over B. Wood? I don’t see demoting Pearce as an answer — he’s a better bat, while he may have less pop.
The more I think about this…the less I like it. I am intrigued by the long-ball potential he brings, but don’t have confidence in his ability to play SS for us. If he is not going to be fixable on offense enough to cover the drop in defense vs. Cedeno…I’ll pass.
The MiLB power sure is intriguing though.
He played SS adequately at AAA
Anah has several great SS options.
Cedeno should not start over anyone, his glove is inconsistent and his bat will produce a .180 with a bunch of stupid bunts and K’s.
This team needs to take a look at some SS options.
