Colin Dunlap tweets that "there is a good chance" Xavier Paul will report to the Pirates today and the team will have to make the corresponding 25-man roster move. There has been a fair amount of discussion about whether Steve Pearce will be sent down or John Bowker will be designated for assignment.
If you're in the Neal Huntington 'reversible vs. irreversible decisions' camp, it probably makes sense to send Pearce down to Indy for a month to get regular playing time and get a sense of what you have in Paul. Pearce's option means no assets are lost with this move.
If you think the Pirates view this as they apparently did the Brandon Wood vs. Josh Rodriguez situation last week, where they think Paul is an upgrade on Bowker, then you are probably in the DFA Bowker camp. It's possible Bowker clears waivers and goes to Indy as Garrett Olson did, but there is a non-zero chance he will be claimed.
