We all know how important defense is in baseball. You can lose winnable games as we just saw, if the defense is shaky. This can especially hurt when the offense isnt giving you any breathing room as is. We all know about the defensive woes thus far. Almost everyone has contributed their fare share of errors. To date, the Buccos are averaging 0.88 errors per game and are 27th in the league. Last year they ended the season at 0.78.
My question is as follows: How much improvement can we expect here? Between (gaining from) experience, techniques, and the players' skills, what can we expect out of this team by the end of the year? Is there a certain ranking these guys should be at regardless of who the coaches are (just based on talent alone)? Have the past coaching staffs hurt the guys or do they just stink?
While the main focus should be on pitching and hitting, there has to be a major improvement in the defense as well. in the bottom 15 teams of the league, only 2 teams have a winning record (a bunch are at or near .500). Whereas the in the top 15 teams, you only have 4 teams that are under .500.
You can lose a lot of winnable games with a dumb play or two that extends an innning and gives the other team freebies. you can check out the stats at http://www.teamrankings.com/mlb/stats/?stat=errors-per-game
