Danny Moskos: Struggle In Indy Last Year Due To Delivery Change
Apparently, Moskos was previously using a temporary delivery instituted by Dean Treanor as a teaching tool. At some point they were going to take out the teaching tool, and they decided to do that when he got to AAA. Moskos struggled with getting comfortable with the new delivery initially which he attributes to his flame out in AAA last year.
It's good to see that perhaps Moskos is on the right track now after most of us had written him off long ago. Now that he's been called up, we finally get a chance to see how his stuff will play in the bigs.

I wrote a little about this in the Eavn Meek to DL thread
so I won’t repeat here. I was initially mildly confused as to why they would change the delivery when he arrived at AAA, but I wonder if they let him go up there and struggle for a bit, to make sure he understood why it was necessary and get him committed to the change.
Anyway, here’s hoping he confounds our expectations.

THE ARTICLE WASN'T VERY CLEAR, SON.
Moskos struggled with getting comfortable with the new delivery
SO HIS “NEW DELIVERY” WAS BASICALLY HIS “OLD” ONE, CORRECT?
THAT GOES BACK TO ONE OF MY ORIGINAL QUESTIONS: WHY FOOL AROUND WITH SOMEONE WHO WAS HAVING SUCCESS? MOSKOS WAS LIGHTS OUT IN ALTOONA FROM THE START OF THE SEASON LAST YEAR. EFFING AROUND WITH HIS DELIVERY DESPITE BEING SUCCESSFUL SMELLS LIKE A DAVE KERWIN MANEUVER.

clear as a bell, SON:
Emphasis mine so perhaps you can comprehend the plain English, but probably not.
Dean Treanor and I instituted the extreme turn our first year together in Double-A. I knew it was turn that was going to incorporate my lower half and allow me to get drive from my legs. It was a teaching tool that I would be getting rid of at some point down the road. I was able to get away with fringy command in Double-A because I could out stuff people, but here you can’t do that and the hitters know whats coming before you throw the pitch.
His delivery was changed to [ A ] add leg drive, and [ B ] help stop tipping pitches. It’s pretty frighteningly clear.
And by the way – I ain’t your “SON,” and I thank god every day for that.

Perhaps if you changed your avatar to Foghorn Leghorn,
the “son” stuff would be mildly funny, instead of condescending.

I didn't feel the need to bold
“Dean Treanor and I instituted …” because it is also abundantly clear that it had everything to do with Moskos wanting to be MORE successful and that it had nothing to do with Kerwin.
But perhaps I should have.

but it's not at all
The big knock on Moskos coming in as a draftee was that, despite his excellent stuff, he had a high-effort delivery which would make him possibly injury-prone, and unlikely to succeed as a starter. Evidently, Treanor identified more involvement from Moskos’ legs as a way to avoid those problems.
Also, it was a ‘temporary delivery’ because evidently Moskos needed to exaggerate the changed motion in order to make the change. Highly refined, repeated motions like a pitching delivery are very hard to change, because the brain doesn’t consciously control the motion. Instead, it happens as what we call ‘muscle memory,’ which are just ingrained motor commands from the brain. A competitive situation is a very powerful stimulus for the brain to proceed with whatever reaction it knows best; i.e. the delivery which is most practiced, and thus most ‘comfortable.’ In order to override the stimulus and change for example a pitching delivery, it’s natural that it’s necessary to exaggerate the change initially. Once the change starts to settle in, one can refine it; finding the middle ground, if you will.
As such, it sounds like the whole plan for Moskos from start to finish was intelligent and well-planned; and so far, appears successful.
