A Modest Proposal: What the Home Opener did for me...

While you never like a loss, here's why I'm glad the game played out the way it did today....

It tempered already muted enthusiasm and refocused my thoughts surrounding the team to where they ought to be directed...

2012-2013 - when guys like Bryan Morris, Rudy Owens, and beyond begin to arrive.

Paul Maholm doesn't miss enough bats and neither does Ross Ohlendorf.  Our defense is going to get better as NFW improves.  Hell, Pedro might even improve his footwork too.  Tabata and McCutchen will get a better read on the ballparks and continue to take better routes and see the ball better off the bat.  That said, our defense is going to be horrible all year long.  Ronnie Cedeno will botch big plays.  We will...strike out when we're at the plate and walk lots of opposing hitters.

That old sneaky optimism had started taking root but today fixed that right up.  The good news is, I can already promise you this season will be more interesting.  The bad news is, the standings won't be much different from last year's.  I'm resolved to steel myself against baseball despair with the knowledge (hope) that help is on its way.

Shame on me for letting myself believe, even for an instant, that the Bucs had a shot at meaningful baseball in 2011.
