Ross Ohlendorf Leaves Game With Shoulder Injury

Ross Ohlendorf left tonight's game after pitching 2.2 innings and throwing 52 pitches. The Pirates are reporting that he has right shoulder discomfort. I have little doubt that this will lead to a stint on the DL. Jeff Karstens replaced Ohlendorf and pitched very effectively. He went 3.1 innings, allowing no runs, two hits and three walks while striking out five.

Karstens is the obvious short-term replacement for Ohlendorf's next start.

We're getting ahead of ourselves a bit, but it's possible we won't see either of tonight's starting battery in a Pirates uniform again this year. If Ohlendorf has a serious shoulder injury he could be out for an extended time and Chris Snyder has six RBIs thus far tonight in his second rehab start with Class A+ Bradenton and is eligible to come off the DL on Saturday. The obvious move would be to send Jason Jaramillo down to Indianapolis.

UPDATE by Charlie: The Pirates won Friday night but, in addition to losing Ohlendorf, went through their entire bullpen except Evan Meek, with three guys (Karstens, Chris Resop and Garrett Olson) pitching at least two innings. It will be interesting to see how they get through the rest of the weekend - if Charlie Morton and James McDonald can get deep into their starts, that will be huge.
