Pirates Roster Moves?

Ross Ohlendorf left Friday' night's start with shoulder discomfort. Evan Meek was unavailable during the 14-inning marathon because his shoulder tightened up on Friday afternoon. With the bullpen going a lights-out 11.1 innings, the team is going to be very shorthanded going into Saturday's game and will likely be forced to make a roster move or two. Jeff Karstens, Mike Crotta, Chris Resop, Garrett Olson and Meek are all unlikely to be available tomorrow as Hurdle has said he doesn't want to use any of his relievers three days in a row. That leaves only Jose Veras and Joel Hanrahan. Since they both pitched Friday as well they aren't likely to go more than an inning Saturday.

The obvious move would be to DL Ohlendorf immediately and call up Daniel McCutchen for Saturday's game. McCutchen is part of the Indianapolis rotation, but has yet to pitch this year. Brian Burres would have to be added to the 40-man roster and he pitched Thursday and Sean Gallagher, another option, pitched Friday.

Brad Lincoln and Scott Olsen are the obvious candidates to take Ohlendorf's roster spot if he is out long-term, but neither is healthy at the moment. Lincoln is expected to make a start over the weekend for Bradenton. With Karstens' strong showing, with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings, he will most certainly get the nod next time Ohlendorf's spot in the rotation comes up.

I would expect Joe Beimel and Chris Snyder to join the team possibly on Monday's off day. Beimel threw a scoreless inning Friday for Bradenton and will probably pitch another inning over the weekend. Snyder got his second start also at Bradenton. He caught and went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and six RBIs. Since the bullpen has been so good, it isn't clear whose roster spot Beimel would take unless Meek needs to go on the DL. The obvious move when they add Snyder is to send Jason Jaramillo to Indy. I guess there is a chance the Pirates could send Steve Pearce down (since he has an option left) until they are 100 percent comfortable the Snyder is fine, but I would prefer they option Jaramillo.
