I have a question for anyone who has seen or has been following Gift Ngoepe, the shortstop currently in Charleston. I know there was a great deal of hype, and that many thought his signing was more about publicity than about Major League possibilities. At the moment (71 at bats) he has a .296 average and an .838 OPS. My understanding was that he has always had the defensive chops, but that, since he grew up hitting against pitchers who occasionally missed the backstop, and who only accidentally found the plate, he would likely never hit good pitching. At what point might he be a real prospect? He has 11 Ks against 7 BBs, but, considering where he started, .296 and .838 seem kind of for real, even for A- ball.
