Making Numbers Lie?

Often we form opinions about a player's performance and then stick with those opinions even though they may no longer be true. These are small sizes but they do represent what has actually happened over basically the last three weeks.

Caveats: I selected the sample size. The starting point was arbitrarily decided by me, but four start within a day or two of each other. The common aspect to the samples is they all are current.

Here is a look at the performance of 5 players. You guess who they are. I'll put up the answers later today. If you happen to know because I posted something about this elsewhere, hold your fire in the comments if you don't mind.

                     G    AB    H     2B    3B   HR     RBI     BB     K      Triple Slash       OPS

PLAYER A:  14    50    13     3      0      2         3        2      11    .260/.288/.440    .728

Start Date: May 1. Analysis: A bland line. With a few more walks would be exceedingly average.

PLAYER B:  18    56    18     3      1      1         7        8      13    .321/.406/.464    .871

Start Date: April 29. Analysis: Very solid performance.

PLAYER C:  11    46     11     4      0      0        2        4       9     .239/.300/.326     .626

Start Date: May 9. Analysis: Pretty empty line. No punch.

PLAYER D:  18    73     22     5     2      5        14       8       9     .301/.370/.630    1.001

Start Date: April 29. Analysis: All-Star. MVP-type numbers in small sample

PLAYER E:   14   43      6      3      0      0        2        9       9      .140/.283/.209     .492

Start Date: April 28. Horrendous. A BABIP of .171 offers small encouragement.

Have at it.
