Minor League Open Thread, 23 May 2011
With the big-league team off tonight, here's a look at what's going on around the minors.
Brad Lincoln and Indianapolis are in progress against Scranton.
Jeff Locke has already allowed four runs for Altoona against Bowie.
Nate Baker and Bradenton take on Lakeland.
West Virginia lost 6-5 to Lakewood. Jameson Taillon pitched five innings and allowed three runs, striking out two and walking one. Tyler Waldron took the loss in relief. Rogelios Noris and Eric Avila homered for the Power.

I’ll say this here as I dont believe I got a reply in one of the game threads I asked it:
Does anyone know whats up with Exicardo Cayonez and where he will be playing this year?
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend!
Injury before the year began
Expect him in State College.
Was just gonna post the same thing.
He was awesome last year and now it seems like every outing he’s getting shelled. Can anyone who follows Altoona more closely offer any insight?
I dunno
He K’d 25% of the batters he faced, but he also walked 3 and let up some doubles. This is interesting, in April, he had a 27:6 K/BB, and so far in May, it’s been 9:10. The optimist in me (which is usually the side that comes out when I talk about prospects) wants to say it’s due to them tweaking his delivery or changing which pitches he can throw, much like we saw when Moskos got promoted to AAA last year.
Locke picked up where he left off last year, and he just hasn’t been the same pitcher in May. I have to assume they wouldn’t still be throwing him out there if he was hurt, so the above seems the most logical explanation.

He has more home runs tonight than the entire Pirates team.
Also, as a Vikings fan, thanks for the support for Carter. It’s a stomach punch every time he is denied entry to the Hall.

That and he could have played one handed

I hate him as an announcer though.
Comes off as being quite dumb, and often quite self-contradictory.
Randy Moss destroyed him head to head though.
Taillon’s stats are outstanding but I’m sure he’ll improve over the summer and biggest thing is avoid injury.
Nate Baker with a nice line
6IP, 3H, 2BB, 8K, 6/2 GO/AO
I’ve never seen him put up a line like that.

And how's this for a box score
10-3, 14 innings, 31 combined hits, 6 errors. That’s our VSL team, of course.

6 Errors? Nutting's too cheap to buy them gloves!

I'm looking forward
To Lincoln getting his inevitable call-up and his inevitable inability to succeed at the MLB level.
I am curious why Huntington isn’t giving Lincoln a shot after putting up some solid performances. Isn’t Lincoln’s potential higher than Karstens (Karstens being the only option to go, I suppose)?
While the major-league squad is doing better than hoped, they are not a wild card nor likely an 80-win team. Development is still a priority – given that, I would have expected to see Lincoln up soon, not locked into AAA by a guy that can’t pitch past the 5th inning effectively most of the time.
And even if Huntington's trying to build up Karsten's trade value...
What is the most a team would give up for Karstens? I can’t imagine more than C prospect or something to that effect.
I don't think Karstens is going anywhere.
He’s just going to be the filler guy. Maholm, Correia, and Ohlendorf all have a higher shot of being traded in my opinion. The shot of Ohlendorf moving is low right now but once he comes back Huntington will probably try to move him as he is going to get expensive under arb and he is not that good.
Should the Pirates keep Neal Huntington?

yeah Ohlie will probably be given a relief role? Who gets sent down? If he joins the rotation Karstens moves to the pen, again who goes down?
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend!

Easy.
