Summer with A Pro Teams Minor League Office

Stay connected for news and updates

Hey all,

I've mentioned that I hoped to make two fanposts involving this with Trogs and now I'm going to share this with you all,

I'm a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point, and this summer I will be doing an AIAD (Academic Individual Advanced Development program) with the Front Office of a Major League Franchise (who will remain nameless due to privacy/security issues). I will be spending three weeks later this summer with their Minor League Office doing a statistical/sabremetrics analysis for their minor league teams.

Two cadets did a similar program last year and another cadet is currently working for the same team that I will be working for in July. Last year the cadets made an analysis on injury likelyhood for various players, while taking their positions and workload into account (I.E. what injurys are outfielders more prone to given their playing time/activity vs what is more likely to happen to a bullpen pitcher or a front-line starter)  And the cadet currently working is analyzing an optimization problem analyzing logistically a way for scouts to maximize the amount of talent they see with each trip they go on, mapping out routes, teams, etc.

What I hope to be doing is a Systems engineering approach creating a value scoring system for prospects as a way to measure trade value and likelyhood that a prospect is prepared for a promotion. I won't be able to directly share the results of my analysis as it will be property of the team I will be working for but I wanted to let you all know that I will be having this experience and will be sharing some stories and what my experience was like after it's all said and done. I hope you all enjoy what I'll be sharing and I thought it was a cool thing that most baseball fans would be interested in hearing.

Hope everyone's having and great summer and go Buccos!
