Rob Biertempfel and Dejan Kovacevic are both tweeting updates on the three players recently added to the DL. As I expected Ryan Doumit's ankle injury is pretty severe. He has a non-displaced fracture of his left ankle, but there is no ligament damage. The Pirates are saying he will be out at least a month. I wouldn't expect to see him before the all-star break and that is a blow to both the team and to Doumit who is trying to elevate his market value with the Pirates unlikely to pick up his option. It would not surprise me if Doumit wasn't ready until August 1.
Steve Pearce has a partially torn right calf and is "week-to-week." This is not your average muscle pull and my experience with this injury is three weeks to a month before running. Obviously everyone is different, but I wouldn't expect Pearce back much before the all-star break. Obviously a big blow to him as well.
Joe Biemel has a left elbow condition that they are also calling week-to-week. Beimel's Pirates career is going to be a short one in my opinion. Tony Watson in Indy may already be a better alternative.
Like the Ohlendorf injury it looks like the early timelines put on these injuries are not particularly conservative, but are just guidelines. Either way, none of these guys is now likely to play a big part in team's suceess this year or going forward.
UPDATE: It now appears that the Pirates have NOT put a timetable on Pearce's injury.
