News that Chris Snyder could be out the rest of the season with a back problem was a terrible blow to the Pirates. Now, all three of their options are out with injuries and the pirates find themselves in a murky situation. They could acquire Jesus Montero, a top hitting prospect from the yankees farmhand, for Hanrahan and others.
Or, they could acquire a blocked prospect for someone like Jose Veras. I would love to see them try and acquire Austin Romine. Although he was recently put on the 7 day Disabled List with concussion-like symptons, there is no need to worry. He was plunked because he didnt give the AAA pitcher alot of the plate and it seems like just a cautionary step by the part of the Yankees. He is currently blocked with Russel Martin getting most of the starts at the big league level and prospects Montero and Gary Sanchez are more highly regarded than Romine. He has one of the best gloves in the minors and great power to go with it. He is major league ready having spent a season and a half in AAA. Coming off a season in which he batted .268 with only 10 homreruns and 69 RBI, he is now tearing up AAA pitchers with a .298 batting avg. to go along with 4 homeruns and 31 RBI. He is still only 22, and wont turn 23 till late November. He is 6 foot and 220 pounds, so he projects to go to first base but not in the near future.
Brother of Pirate prospect Travis D'Arnaud would also be an excellent fit. He has a crazy good arm, but not the best defensive catcher. He is pretty much a double power guy, he led the league in it in '09, but has shown great homerun power also. Look for him to drive in 90+RBI with about 20 Homers and 30+ doubles. He is currently in AA, so it wouldn't really help the pirates right now, but he is blocked by J.P Arencibia and who wouldnt want to play play with their older brother?[chase is 24, travis 22.]
