Today the Pirates again placed Evan Meek on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of Tim Wood from Indianapolis. To make room for Wood on the 40-man roster, the team moved Chris Snyder to the 60-day DL. Snyder underwent back surgery for a herniated disc this morning at Allegheny General Hospital.
Wood was signed on March 31 after the Washington Nationals released him. Wood requested his release after being told he would start the season at the AA level. He appeared in 44 games for the Florida Marlins in 2009 and 2010 with mixed results. He has been very good at Indianapolis, posting 24 K and only four walks in 24.1 IP with a WHIP of 0.904 and no homers allowed.
Meek's shoulder is now a serious concern. His injury is diagnosed as shoulder tendonitis and it is the second time he has gone on the DL this season. Expectations of him contributing the rest of this season now have to be pretty low. I would guess that this time they will give him until the after the All-Star break to rest and recover.
UPDATE by Charlie: Wood's stuff this season has been terrific, along with his numbers. (In addition to the ones David mentioned, he's also getting almost twice as many outs on the ground as he is in the air.) It gives me no pleasure to see Meek hurt again, especially since multiple shoulder injuries in the same season can portend serious problems, but Wood could turn out to be quite a silver lining if all goes well. I'm happy to see him get a chance.
UPDATE by David: Meek will see Dr. James Andrews on Monday.
