Pirates Trying To Trade For Catcher
Jenifer Langosch tweets that the Pirates are trying to trade for a catcher but other teams are asking the world, trying to take advantage of the Pirates' desperation.
Fortunately, the Pirates have no reason to be desperate. I can understand why they would be trying to strike a deal right now, but if they can't, they can just promote Eric Fryer, who I like much better than Dusty Brown or Wyatt Toregas. It's a relatively small sample size, but Fryer is hitting .333/.423/.553 between Class AA and AAA this year; there's simply no reason for the Pirates to give up anything interesting for some team's third-string catcher.

Exactly what type of experience does Matt Diaz have at catcher?
I´ve heard him mentioned numerous times as our emergency catcher but yet have I heard his name used to solve our current emergency
He's the "emergency" cathcer in that...
he could catch a couple of innings in a pinch. He’s not good enough for any type of extended play.

“Emergency” means, for example, that your starting catcher and backup catcher get injured in the same game. That’s the situation that would leave Diaz catching. If you have time to promote someone else, you avoid it. Basically, management is saying that even The Wonder Twins are better catchers than Diaz would be.

I still don`t understand why its ludicrous to have Walker catch
This mgmt supposedly values players that can field multiple positions but when it comes time when they really need one, they deny the option.
Walker could catch tonight. D`Arnaud or Harrision could play 2B tonight
And our lineup would be better

“I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make the team, whether it’s go somewhere else on the field or do whatever’s necessary,” said Walker, the Pirates’ 11th-overall draft choice in 2004 from Pine-Richland High School. “I feel like I’m capable of playing other positions if I need to.”

Because he can’t, uh, catch! I mean, it’s not going to do anybody any good if Walker is basically chasing balls to the backstop every pitch…
Yeah, no.
Thank you Ned Colletti.

The last time Walker caught with any regularity, in the AFL the year before he was moved to third, the general consensus among scouts was that he was a ghastly defender there, i.e. significantly worse than Doumit. That’s the primary reason he was moved in the first place, and I doubt that several years’ worth of rust has improved his skills as a backstop at all.

IIRC, Walker also once said that catching would make him so tired that he would just give up on at-bats at the ends of games.

If I had to guess
I would bet a lot of that was conditioning oriented. That was very early in his professional career, and he probably wasn’t as well conditioned as he is now. That being said, Neil Walker catching is like cocaine. Just say no.

IIRC, there was one anonymous scout (quoted in a Rosenthal column) who said that Walker that AFL was the worst defensive catcher he’d ever seen.
The scout was correct
I watched Walker catch in Altoona. He did not look like a catcher. Stiff with no fluidity. My only question was, “Why haven’t they moved him yet?”
Viva Clemente!
I'd eat a fried double down as a chicken sacrifice
If that’s what it takes

Is Fryer bad with the glove?
Looking at his history, the guy’s got a consistent minor league OPS above 800. If he’s just an okay bat, we’re talking about a world of improvement over Dusty unless he’s that bad actually, you know, catching.

no, fryer is decent... hes not as quick behind the plate as Sanchez, nor does he have a gun
but he might make a very good backup catcher in MLB one day.
seen him play now about a half dozen times. good athlete, decent bat.
Thanks
Let’s just bring him up then. I know the consensus was not to screw with the 40 man if it was going to be a short-term injury for Snyder, but we can’t keep going into games with these terrible lineups.

this is the 2ND game, man
its already reported that the FO is trying to work on the catching, and that other teams are trying to take advantage of our situation…
we definately dont want that happening.
How ’bout we put Clement back behind the plate?
Jason
The Hanging Curve
Just promote Sanchez
to Indy and bring up Fryer. At least Fryer has the potential to hit.
They’re going to have to add Fryer to the 40-man after the season, anyway. He sneaked through the Rule 5 last year, but if he plays most of this year in AAA and continues to handle it well, they’re sure to lose him. He could surely handle a backup C job.

I like this!
I liked the pop clement had. Might be something they should look at if they decide to keep him anymore years. You could carry 3 catchers have doumit and clement in different roles.
by Joey Mooney on Jun 12, 2011 4:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
clement should never, ever catch again
as much as i would like him to be the left handed platoon option at catcher, his knees/legs are pretty much shot to hell.
even if he became a better hitter at the MLB level, hes pretty much a journeyman 1Bman from here on out.
Clemen had good pop no doubt...
but his problem is that we hardly ever heard the pop when he swung in the majors. That and he’s had several knee issues which will prevent him from ever catching again. He didn’t even catch last year and he went on the dl because of his knees.
#AllTheBuntsAreBad!
Yeah but...
I said I liked the idea! Clement can’t stay healthy as a first baseman and Snyder and Doumit both good catchers but get hurt more than anyone. I can’t see the pirates spending much on a catcher I would rather see that money go to bell.
