My Top 35 Prospects. . .Assuming Everyone signs
So, I was bored at work one day after the draft, and I was wondering what our to prospects lists would look like if everyone signed. I decided to do a somewhat objective list, assigning values to ceiling, likeliness to reach ceiling (i.e. how much is projection/hope tools play out), floor, likeliness of floor and chance that the player, due to injury risk or risk of never realizing potential, is a complete bust (I understand that in reality every prospects floor is a bust, but I'm using floor in a sense of value if a player suffers no major setbacks and develops naturally, but never reaches full potential). I put the most weight in ceiling, and I also added or subtracted points based on positional scarcity (with catchers, SS, 2b, and CFs getting points and 1B, Corner OFs and relief pitchers losing points). Obviously, anything like this has a high level of subjectivity, and I may have overlooked some guys. Here is my list:
1. Cole
2. Taillon
3. Bell
4. Sanchez
5. Allie
6. Heredia
7. Marte
8. D'Arnaud
9. Locke
10. Cain
11. Owens
12. Wilson
13. Curry
14. Pressley
15.Cunningham
16. Morris
17. Dickerson
18. ZVR
19. Fryer
20. Hernandez
21. Lambo
22. Pounders
23. McPherson
24. Moreno
|
25. Grossman 26. Dodson |
27. Hererra
28. Hague
29. Mercer

It's hard to move Marte up any . . .
the top 6 are really good prospects. I don’t think Grossman’s ceiling is particularly high, he may not be able to play CF and his high K rate gives him a high bust rate. Curry is tough to rank at this point. He doesn’t have a high pedigree and was old for WV, but man, he’s just hit since he’s been in our system.
Everything that guy just said is bullshit . . .thank you
these lists are always too debateable, but...
IMO your too high on Locke, Wilson, Curry, Cunningham, and your too low on Pounders, Dickerson, and Presley.
Again IMO, if Dickerson signs he becomes a top 10 prospect right away. Presley looks like the real deal ala Sam Fuld. He should be top 10 as well. I like the grade on Cain; he could be really high on these lists come next year…
Sam Fuld?
“Sam Fuld” and “real deal” do not belong in a sentence together.
eh
real deal as in he came up and hit over .300 and played excellent defense. Something that Presley could do for us..

Presley is 26 years old, little too old to be a top 10 prospect in my opinion
especially with the players we have
I think Heredia should be ahead of Allie and Sanchez.
In fact, while I still think Sanchez will be a fine mlb catcher, I would drop him below Marte as well.
I know I’m probably just falling in love with the sparkly new toy, but Curry is really making a case to be in the top 10 ahead of Wilson, Owens, D’Arnaud and Locke.
I would see a top 10 of…
1. Taillon
2. Cole
3. Bell
4. Heredia
5. Marte
6. Sanchez
7. Curry
8. Allie (he’s this low because it has taken him a while to even start)
9. Cain
10. Owens
Allie
Stetson Allie is one guy that just seems to catch a bad rap. I think that if you took a general poll of people’s opinion on Allie, many if not most would say that his arrow is pointing down from where he was at Christmas time. He’s been in extended spring training, he struggled with control when Tim was covering him in March, he may not play full season ball this season, etc.
The problem with that logic is that the Pirates have said all along that Taillon and Allie should not be viewed as any kind of a package. Taillon is and has been much more polished than Allie. When Allie was drafted, we were all told by various outlets that he was raw, had a power arm, had some control problems, and was relatively new to pitching. We were also told that it would take him time to move up through the minors. Now, it almost seems like people have forgotten that reports. I read things about Allie “Not even playing in full season ball at the age of 20”, and “Had no idea where his pitches were headed”.
Maybe this is just my imagination, but it seems that we’ve begun to write Allie off before he even throws a pitch. We were told that it would take a lot of time and work for him to climb the ladder, but we don’t seem willing to give him that time.
I'd move Cain & Curry up a little
but it’s a pretty good list overall. Looks like a list of top prospects of a real MLB team !
"Pitch me outside, I will hit .400. Pitch me inside, and you will not find the ball." - Roberto Clemente
What are the top 30 Beatles songs?
Do you go for the upside of ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ or the high floor of ‘I want to hold your hand’? Everyone is going to have a slightly different middle portion, so, nice list overall. I like the bump for D’Arnaud.
I actually did a top 30 Beatles songs once. . .
and number 1 was Strawberry Fields Forever.
Everything that guy just said is bullshit . . .thank you
That's just crazy talk.
Everybody knows that Ringo was always getting short shrift because of his age in relation to level.

why?
Scouting reports haven’t changed. Should be a good everyday catcher. It’s weird how underrated he is by Pirate fans. He’s easily #2 in our system by most accounts (until Cole signs, that is).
bat, mostly
and, uh, i m not entirely sold on how he’s gonna handle big league catching duties (but i’ve been in this argument before, and don’t wish to revisit it again here). But the reason for his drop in my eyes now is his bat…
Well, 7 and yeah.
Again, I tried to make this as objective as possible. Hague scored well in some areas because without much improvement, he should at least be a bench bat. Rojas is all about projection and, in my eyes, has a high chance of being stuck in A ball for his career.
Everything that guy just said is bullshit . . .thank you
These lists are always fun
Initially, I wanted to quibble about which guys I think (IMO) that you are a little high on or have maybe undervalued a bit (for the most part I think you’re being pretty fair). Instead, I’d just rather point out how this list illustrates the depth the organization is starting to develop.
The truth is I’m excited enough to keep an eye on every one of those guys 1-35 (even though some, like Andrew Lambo make me want to pull my hair out…was this kid really just one spot behind Domonic Brown?). Add that to the number of good young guys already in Pittsburgh…it feels strange to say this but it’s a pretty nice time to be a Pirates’ fan.
