XP: TRADE VALUE

Many of you are waiting for the FO to call up rf Alex Presley, and for good reason. Xavier Paul and Presley are so similar, it is freaky. Both have good speed, gap power, and can spell Tabata or Cutch at any time. That is the reason Presley is still at AAA.

So, what might Paul bring in return? I was thinking about when we had Eric Hinske and traded him for Eric Fryer and someone else. Yes, Hinske and Paul are different players, but the speed of Paul makes up for the power of Hinske IMO. Not to mention Paul is the better defender. But back to the point, we traded Hinske to the Yanks for eric Fryer and another player. Obviously the Yankees dont need a speedy outfielder like Paul, but a team like the Blue Jays with all their power might entertain offers. If we could somehow get D'Arnaud, I would be estatic. But I will settle for a Fryer anyday. Eric Fryer, that is.

PS. I was about to publish this post when I saw it said Fryer was a LF........anyone know anything about this?

A dove bar. Probably not Cookie Dough, though.

It would be great to get something

but anybody in the league could have had him when the Dodgers DFA’ed him. If any team thought he was worth it they would have flipped something for him. I don’t think he is worthless like some do but there is no way that he should be getting regular at-bats.

FWIW

He’s been much better as a Pirate than he was as a Dodger. In fact, he’s accumulated 0.4 WAR as a Pirate in 97 PAs (and 180 defensive innings) after accumulating -0.3 WAR in 160 PAs with the Dodgers.

In other words, he’s been much, much better as pirate than he ever was as a Dodger. Therefore, he’s logically worth more now than he was then. Now, it may not be much more, but the guy has played like a league-average OF for us. Pretty sure league-average OFs have some value, if not much.

Also, too

Just realized – this statement is completely wrong. We were first on the list at the time he was DFA’d. Nobody else had a crack at him. For all we know, all 28 other MLB teams would also have taken him. Probably not, but we have exactly as much evidence for that proposition as we for for the one that nobody wanted him but us.

I think the point is

That the Dodgers had 10 days after DFA to trade him before placing him on waivers and they couldn’t get anyone to give them so much as a C prospect in exchange for Paul.

Fair enough

But it’s still not that clean, in that a team looking at a guy like Paul has to decide whether to risk an asset vs. hope to get him for free (or whatever the tiny waiver wire fee is). Indeed, the Pirates themselves wanted Paul, but not enough to trade somebody for him (in part because they were first on the waiver wire).

Anyway, if you want to talk about change in value, do you think that Paul could clear waivers right now? Not a chance, rightª?

ª wRC+ 85, and he’s shown plus OF defense

Ya Brian21's got it...

We picked him up off the scrap heap so it’s not like he has any value. He probably has the most value to the Pirates to just keep throwing him out there as long as he continues to hit a little bit, and provide good speed and defense. If you wanna see Presley so bad then get rid of Overbay and move GFJ to 1B and stick him in RF platooning w/XP

Hinske was worth nothing...

Hinske didn’t do crap for the Pirates and they still got a decent player for him. I think if the Pirates could get a player for XP im cool with that.

I have an idea.....

Lets call up Presley AND keep Paul. Wow!

by JJDURNEY88 on Jun 19, 2011 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

We should just keep building with defense and speed. We can trade some prospects for a solid power hitter eventually..but id rather see a lot of stolen bases and runs batted in than homers all the time.. but thats just me

D'arnaud?

The Blue Jays aren’t going to trade a big-time catching prospect when he’s tearing it up offensively in the upper minors for a 4th outfielder with minimal pop.

It's spelled:

E.V.A.N. M.E.E.K.

Unless you’re saying “Even Meek (can strike batters out).” You have had TWO chances to spell it right. Just thought you should know for the next time.
