Tabata's Replacment
With Alex Presley already scheduled to come up do we see Pedro Ciriaco remain with the club and play down an outfielder, or do we see somebody from the minor leagues come up?
The obvious candidate would be John Bowker, since he has big league experience.
Bowker has hit well since being sent to AAA (.300/.351/.441), but what else is new. His last 10 games his line is .176/.275/.382.
Maybe there is another candidate.
How about Gorkys Hernandez as a call up candidate? He's on the 40-man roster and he has a respectable line, but not spectacular line, of .282/.342/.380. His last 10 games his line is .324/.410/.441.
I know Bowker adds the element of pop, but I would like to see Hernandez get the shot. If he does well, perhaps he can become our RF or he could make himself into a better trade chip.

Or Tabata could be fine...lol.
During the post game interview, Greg Brown said Tabata was most likely heading to the DL. I’m hoping he’s wrong and the examination goes well on Monday.
According to Beertemple
Tabata may not go on the DL after all. We’ll know more tomorrow.

Langosch immediately after the game
Saw Jose Tabata while leaving clubhouse. He was limping but walking on his own. Asked how he was: “I don’t know. Better. We’ll see tomorrow”

Presley's Defense
Does anyone know how Presley rates defensively? I’m guessing he may not possess Tabata’s range, but what about his arm? He’ll have to learn the nuances of playing PNC Park along with the other stadiums.
my vote goes to Gorkys!
I say bring Gorkys up and find out what we have in him. He would add great defense and speed to this team right off the get go. Then, if he could continue his line of .290/.350 give or take he could be our leadoff man (IMO, this team still lacks a true leadoff hitter). I feel Tabatas better suited for RF and the #2 spot in the lineup anyway…
Gorkys has been bad historically
This is the highest batting average he’s had since he was traded to the Pirates I believe, and he’s never hit for much power, average, or even used his speed on the basepaths.
Do we use an option, by having him on the 40-man?
If so… GORKYS!
Tabata might be day-to-day anyways though.
option already used for the year
Gorkys was optioned after Spring Training and since he was on the 40 man roster that used him option for the year so it wouldn’t changed anything for this season if he were called up
If he’s not getting his leg amputated he may be a bit of a drama queen. Or hell maybe not, it’s not my leg
With his history of leg problems
I don’t blame him if he felt like there was a tear or anything. Could have been career ending.
Drama Queen
maybe he learned that from his ex

I would be surprised if Tabata doesn't go on the DL.
You don’t get carted off the field on a stretcher for a quad injury and then get better in a few days. I want to see Hague come up and DH with Presley in left field.
Yes this is the best idea.
Except maybe Hague plays first and Jones has DH duties. The player profile article I recently read on piratesprospect said Hague has great defense at first.

"Hague has great defense"
A qualitative observation or quantitatively proven? He has 11 errors, 9 at 1st. Methinks your source is lacking perspective.

Hague has more than respectable defense at 1B... its more than just errors.
that being said, UZR stinks.
>:-D
Gorkys Hernandez would be a terrible idea
He really can’t hit at all. For a team that needs offense he would be my last option. He plays solid defense and is fast but can’t do much with the bat.
I know a lot of people hate John Bowker but he does have some pop and is hitting pretty well in Indianapolis. I really think he is a AAAA player but he is probably the second option if Tabata does go on the DL (behind Hague)
There are a couple of issues, if Hague or Bowker are called up, the Pirates need to clear a 40 man roster spot. That would probably be either Ciraco or Chris Leroux. I don’t think they would move anyone else to the 60 Day DL.
Would they add another LH outfielder?
Presley gives them 3 LH outfielders. With Overbay back at 1st, they don’t need a 4th.

none of us hate Bowker
but lets look at his year to date; he was exclusively a PH with Hurdle’s buccos this season.
he couldnt get on the field at 1B, RF or LF. the organization went out and got a player who can at least field his position.
bowker is an extreme pull hitter. the only time he goes the opposite field is by swinging late at pitches, and its almost always a foul ball.
bowker is basically garret jones, except jones has a somewhat better glove than John.
extreme pull hitter
should have nothing to do if a player gets called up. David Ortiz is an extreme pull hitter as well.
The only reason I wouldn’t call up Bowker is because he is left handed.
he was exclusively as a PH and he could get some additional time now.
I want to see Presley and Hague just as much as anyone but I really don’t know where Hague fits. He is not good defensively any where and he doesn’t have enough power to justify the defensive downgrade
you didnt just compare Bowker to Ortiz, did you?
other than being left handed, there is no comparison.
you know...
you always seem to have an answer to everything…
You said Bowker is an extreme pull hitter…my point is that there are a lot of extreme pull hitters.
stop trying to have a comeback for everything
Josh Harrison...
I know they are planning on calling him back up eventually but he could get the call sooner. Normally, you have to wait 10 days to call him back up but if Tabata goes on the DL then you do not have to wait.
My guess is Harrison if Tabata goes on the DL
It should be Hague.
With the kind of season he is having this year and the Pirate’s desperate need for a first baseman, it would be almost automatic to see him come up in September. He’s going to need to be added to the 40 man roster anyway for that. Ciriaco is not needed on the 40 man anymore, and certainly would clear waivers anyway.
Another 3 hits tonight with a double that just hit off the very top of the fence in left and just missed going out. He seems to be hitting both righties and lefties equally well now. Let’s see what he can do!
Hague has 11 errors, 9 at first base

Last I checked, the DH doesn’t field, right? ;)

If DL'd, next callup will fit Hurdle's key needs
1) PR to replace Ciriaco (though I think he was only used once for that) + 2) RH outfielder (since we are down to Cutch and Diaz (ugh). Gorkys fits the bill?
