If we have players under control till "after" the 2013 season I find it difficult to dump and trade. Still trying to understand the Bay trade when we still had one more year of control.
Maholm is the only trade piece this year....period. If we continue to trade the Hanrahan's of our roster what does it say to FA's in 2012 and beyond. I believe Hurdle made a comment that some players (FA) refuse to even think about negotiating with Pittsburgh due to the atmosphere that surrounds this franchise. If Hanrahan is traded, which I am absolutely against, it better be a steal of a right handed power hitting corner IF or OF prospect. Why not buy out a year or two on Hanrahan's arbitration years instead. If he continues to be successful, he is still a quality chip to trade being a closer.
The timing of McCutchen leaving for FA (unless we buy out a year or two of arbitration) will coincide with the arrival of the "Pitchers". Honestly, I do not see Tallion and Cole being rushed by 2013 season. I see more of a June 2014 call up at the earliest to be very realistic about it. Then what, deju vu all over again in not having any position players to score any runs.
Folks this is going to take a little more time unless the pocket book is opened and that simply is not going to happen or needs to happen. BTW, has anyone checked out the 2012 FA list? I see no realistic FA that would be worth the money. Huntington knows that he has to be extra shrewd in trading a few of our pitching prospects for position prospects. I just do not see that happening this year. Next year, Huntington (yes he will be back) will be very, very interesting on how he is able to balance out our future with pitching and fielding prospects.
