Pirates[or my] Wishlist
As of today, the pirates stand 2 games back out of first place. This is with injuries to both the pitching rotation[our best starter last year and our all star set up man] and to the lineup[Doumit, Snyder, Pearce, Alvarez, Tabata, Jarimillo, and maybe even Neil Walker and/or Windows XP.] Luckily, the pirates have a good GM who has brought in tremendous depth[maybe even too much.] But they cant keep this up forever, can they? So without further ado, I present to you the pirates my wishlist.
Carlos Marmol- This guy has lights out stuff. Although it may cost a pretty good prospect, Tony Sanchez?, it is worth it in my mind. He is only making 3.2 million this year, but is pretty expenive in 2012, 7 million, and in 2013, 9.8 million. Now obviously this is just a wishlist and I dont expect the pirates or the cubs to be willing to make a deal, but it is still awesome to think about what our bullpen would be with him as the set up guy/occasional closer.
Billy Butler- Although he could be had for less than Marmol, it would require major league talent in return[Paul Maholm.] I honestly think that he could be had for a package of Maholm/Resop or probably just Hanrahan but that would be stupid. Butler has Garret Jones power, but he plays a much better defense at first and sports a higher batting average. He will be making 8 million in each of the next 3 years and is making 3 million this year.
Edinson Voluez- He has been very inconsistent and with the Reds starting pitching depth, a couple bad starts and he could find himself back in AAA. The reason why I want this guy so bad is he has tremendous stuff. Maybe he can work with Ray, help him with the mechanics, etc. He does have ace stuff, its just a metter of him cutting down on the walks. He will not become eligible to become a free agent untill 2014. He is making 1.6 million this year.

Carlos Pena...
…he should be easy to get as long as we take the salary.
His BA is low, but he brings POP and solid defense to 1B. A legit middle of the order guy.
WE ARE.......PENN STATE!
He better bring lots of Dr. Pepper...
I mean like truckloads, for me to want the Pirates to get him. He doesn’t represent much of an offensive upgrade over Jones and would cost a prospect and money. Acquiring Pena would be making a move just for the sake of making a move. I’m actually content to see how the internal options play out. Presley has come up and immediately contributed and Hague is tearing up AAA. I’m kind of leaning to letting Pressley stay in the OF and have Jones and Hague man firstbase.
#AllTheBuntsAreBad!
I'd like to see Pena and Cuddyer trades.
Pena (vs. RHP) and Overbay platoon at 1B, with Jones (vs. RHP) and Cuddyer at RF.
The question is: What would it take to get Cuddyer?
Love the Pena idea
He is the ideal trade target and shouldn’t cost the PIrates too much. He hits for power gets on base and would look really good in the middle of hte lineup
A strikeout is better than a doubleplay… @AdamLaRoche

Do you guys even look up his stats before saying these things..
he has a .350 wOBA and is expensive. He will cost a prospect and doesn’t represent a decent upgrade over Jones who has a .335 wOBA.
#AllTheBuntsAreBad!
Overbay (the guy Pena would replace): wOBA .297
’nuff said

Oh I agree...
I’m replacing him with Jones and Hague/Pearce and giving Pessley playing time until he cools off. I think that upgrade works better than Pena imo. Sorry, did mean to be such a dick about it.
#AllTheBuntsAreBad!
How so? Pearce has shown flashes of being a good hitter, but he’s also shown that he’s a huge injury risk. Hague is a hot hitter in AAA right now, but who knows if he can sustain that type of hitting ability in the Majors?

Because I'm confident that they can perform as well as Pena.
and I’m 100% positive it will cost the team nothing to put them in the lineup. Pena has a .350 wOBA (and a .320 last year) but it’s shaky at best because of the high K’s and lack of contact, I’m not sure why anyone ever throws him a ball. He makes $10M a year and would cost a prospect and money to get him. Jones has a wOBA right now around .335 iirc. Pena has a 114 wRC+ and Jones has 109. I just don’t see a huge upgrade there. And I don’t think Pearce and Hague would completely fall apart only seeing lefties. If they do than maybe I’d look to pick up a righty bat closer to the deadline if the team is still within striking distance.
Unfortunately if the Bucs are intent on going outside to upgrade Pena and Cuddyer are really the only attainable guys that would represent upgrades at all. I’d rather see Cuddyer personally but I don’t think either would be worth what the Bucs would have to give up to get them. I also don’t think either is the type of player that will boost this team into the playoffs either.
#AllTheBuntsAreBad!
going with Pena does NOT make the pirates a better team
if anything, the pirates need a hitter, not a slugger. we need a guy who can actually get on base and drive guys in, not just a guy who fails 80% of the time and hits a dinger or two more than average.
nuh uhhhhhhhhhhhh
a homer a week doesnt offset a dozen K’s, a lack of moving runners over, and a large paycheck
and 4 walks, and it’s 1.5 HR a week right now, and the alternative is 9 k’s, a lack of moving runners over, a decent paycheck and sub-par defense
Over Overbay yeah...
over Jones/Hague/Pearce and Presley I’m not so sure. Presley has not looked overmatched so far and has contributed right away. If the Pirates acquire Pena Presley likely goes back to the bench. So I’m with angus, I don’t think Pena makes the team that much better if at all. And I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be worth the cost of acquiring him.
#AllTheBuntsAreBad!
How do we NOT need a slugger? We have, like, the most punchless lineup ever, especially if Pedro can’t produce when he comes back.
Also, Pena does get on base…he has a .351 career OBP and a .347 this year. He’s very adept at it. It’s one of his skills.

dude, who the $#@# is going to drive PENA in????
christ on a corndog!!!
all of you really should stop wanting to run this team like its a fantasy baseball… seriously.
>:-P
your logic is ridiculously circular
dude, who the $#@# is going to drive PENA in????
This is like asking to be FJMed… so you are saying since we don’t have people who can drive guys with good OBPs in, we may as well not bother getting that guy? Heck, we may as well give up baseball and go cheer some other team in some other sport.
IDK...
I’ ve already made my thoughts known on Pena. He’s not much of an upgrade so I don’t see the point in trading for him. I think Diaz will hit so I don’t really see the point in Cuddyer. Sounds like you guys want to make moves just to make moves. Pena and Cuddyer won’t make the team that much better but they will weaken the organization. I think the Pirates are better off with Presley/DIaz in the OF and Hague/Jones at first until Pearce is ready. You get just as much production this way and have to give up nothing.
#AllTheBuntsAreBad!
Maybe it is a move "to make a move"
But sometimes a player wears out his welcome. I am sick of seeing Diaz/Overbay. In addition, I see Jones as a good, and streaky, bench player.
It’s like throwing rocks into a pothole. Problem isn’t solved, but at least it’s better.
by H2O on Jul 1, 2011 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions
see above...
I’m with you on Overbay, I’ve seen enough. I also don’t have a problem sending Jones to the bench but it should be for someone who is markedly better and I just don’t think Pena is. I’ll admit that Cuddyer is interesting but with Diaz starting to warm up I don’t think the Pirates will benefit from that trade.
#AllTheBuntsAreBad!
Pena is also far better in the field than Jones and the beauty of him not being a huge upgrade is he won’t cost much. We aren’t trading for Beltran or Prince
I agree with this.
Getting Pena may only require the Pirates to give up a marginal prospect that they’d possibly have to leave open to the rule 5 draft next season. Well and to pick up the rest of Pena’s salary for this season. I’m totally for patience and not making snap judgements but after half the season now being in the books, I’ve seen more than enough of Overbay.

well that depends because it doesn’t sound as if that’s the case. Hurdle said that everyone is asking for players right now that would make fans scream if Huntington made the deal. I’m not sure why everyone thinks the Cubs would just give Pena away to a team willing to take on his contract. If that were the case I’d say sure go get Pena right now. But I don’t think that’s the situation in reality.
#AllTheBuntsAreBad!
Sadly, neither Jones nor Pena can hit lefties this year, although Pena is not terrible career-wise (.735 OPS).
If we get healthy it probably makes more sense to platoon Pearce/Jones at 1B and let Presley/Diaz/Paul split time in the 3rd OF slot. That’s a big if though and currently we are still starting Lyle Oldbay, who Pena is a massive upgrade over.
massive???
thats just crazy. i’m all for the pirates looking elsewhere for 1B help, but Pena is not a massive upgrade.
once pena becomes a pirate i will ROOT for him. and i will defend him once you start hating his game… and you will hate his game. why? cuz hes NOT a massive upgrade… at all.
and he's not a savior
but he’s an upgrade that wont jeopardize the future at all. If the Cubs demand more, you pass, whatever.
but you are calling it an upgrade, and im telling you that you are mistaken
pena is not an upgrade. more power, yes. better player? i would put them alot closer together than you would.
it doesnt mean that Pena would continue his HR binge as a pirate either
yes, overbay isnt playing well, i know this.
I don't know about massive but significant...
you really underestimate how bad Overbay has been. His wOBA is under 300 while Pena’s is about .346. That’s a pretty big jump. Overbay has been really, really bad on offense so far and he’s defense has been below expectation as well.

Billy Butler
Billy Butler is widely regarded as an atrocious defender at 1st.
Not to mention that the Royals have absolutely no need for Maholm...
who will be a free agent after next season. And they don’t need Resop either. No soup for EvenMeek’s fantasy trade proposal.

Trading Sanchez for Marmol is where I stopped taking this serious
by samvescovi on Jul 1, 2011 11:52 AM EDT reply actions 3 recs
Yep
Two big problems:
1- Marmol would NOT be happy with taking the 8th inning, especially after being a top closer for several years.
2- Pirates fans would NOT be happy with trading Sanchez, and especially not for a reliever.
If Marmol struggles, we throw him out of town, if he succeeds, he complains that he’s not the closer. lose-lose.
so what your saying is
we shouldn’t pull a Ned Colleti

I want
Prince Fielder and Ryan Howard … we’ll platoon them. Whichever one has a higher OPS v the pitcher on the mound will start. If they’ve yet to face that pitcher it’s a cointoss.
Make it happen Neal!
Honus Wagner and Roberto Clemente
We can just bring them back. We will call it our AAAA farm system. Why you guys need to go out of the Pirates system jeez?
by Joey Mooney on Jul 1, 2011 12:26 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
one guy I hope the Pirates are looking into
and a name I havent seen around here, i think: Josh Willingham.
I think he could be had for cheap, although his numbers this year are terrible, and the Bucs need to be doing their work to find out why. He should be able to provide very decent power against LHP, specifically, and getting him out of Oakland might help… esp with the bandboxes in Cincy and Houston (not sure if we have more games against Cincy in Cincy).
But anyway, given what he cost Oakland in the offseason, and given he would be a half season rental, he should be pretty damn cheap.
he could be platooned
but I’d be inclined to give him a shot as a full-time starting RF (i havent watched him play at all, though, this year, so this is based off of what I saw the last couple of years…)
I think I'd rather ask the A's
what it would take to trade for Gio. He’s in the last year of his contract, relatively young, and I believe is making under 500k for the year. Gio is a guy I can see traded for and extended. Also, I keep hearing outfield options being thrown out there. One name I haven’t really heard is BJ Upton. He’s in a contract year and making less than 5 mil in salary this year. But he is a power bat and would be a decent addition to the offense. Would the cost to acquire Upton be that prohibitive? Compared to the popular name being mentioned alot, Cuddyer, who is making about 10 mil, IIRC, this year.
Upton is not a power guy
his value lies in playing a strong CF, which we don’t need much of. Also, I’d avoid trading with the Rays where possible! And I haven’t gone into issues of him fitting in…
Gonzalez is not in the last year of his contract— he will be arb eligible next year according to Cot’s, and going to be quite expensive. I’d gladly trade (say) a Tabata for him, but I don’t think he’ll be available.
Fair enough
But he is on pace for 20-25 HR’s this year. That’s prolly more than we’ll get out of either of the corner outfield positions, with the exception of maybe Cutch. Plus apparently he can also play 3rd and 2nd base. I don’t know, just trying to look for ways to liven up this offense a bit more.
I hate Ludwick...
and I think he sucks.
I’d rather see gulp Matt Diaz :(

prospects
try to fill a position of weakness for 2012 and beyond, maholm is really the only chip we have to trade, moving him with a prospect for a future position player starter would make more sense than bringing a big contract 1 or 2 year wonder. cleveland ,detroit, or even the diamond backs or rockies would be the right trading partner. big market clubs will look for big market salary dump players,so redsox and yankees are not a good fit.
57-105 come on "sale the team"

Carlos Marmol?
He’s an awesome pitcher, but really, of all the places to upgrade this team, you want to focus on the ’pen?
Kinda beating a dead horse
Since it was already an entire FanPost but what about Matt Hague? The kid goes 2-4 with a 2B and a BB every single game. He has a reverse platoon but he’s not incapable of hitting LHP. I’d be nervous about it and maybe he’s no good at all but I hate just having him rot away as a AAA all-star.
There arent really any decent pitcher on the free agent market on the offseason, so picking up maholms option would be worthwhile. 9.5m for a pitcher like him, is pretty fair. If owens or someone else were putting up lights out numbers, it be different, but they arent. the billy butler idea is interesting, he wouldnt cost too much in a trade. if huntington is going to add someone, i can see him getting rid of some of the guys who would be in considerating for the rule 5 crunch for someone who is almost ready to be called up to the majors. I wouldnt be a fan of trading for pena or beltran unless we are legit like 6,7 games over 500 around the allstar break. then theres a reason to make a run for it, but if not, just keep battling it out. It wouldnt help A LOT in the power department, but I would love to see an outfield of tabata mcutchen and BJUpton. then trade for a solid power 1B
So who can fleece Ned Coletti out of this year
because the dodgers do need to shed a crap load of salary
