Roster Moves: Ronny Cedeno And Steve Pearce Return
The Pirates reinstated both Ronny Cedeno and Steve Pearce from the disabled list today and optioned Chris Leroux back to Indianapolis. Nothing surprising here - my only thought is that they waited a day to option Leroux because they had roster issues in Indy. Yesterday, Brian Burres was placed on the minor-league DL, and Josh Rodriguez was sent to Altoona to make room for Josh Harrison and Pedro Ciriaco in Indianapolis. I am not aware of a move to make room for Leroux.
The Pirates had an open spot on the 25-man roster, so no other moves need to be made today. With Ryan Doumit starting his rehab stint in Bradenton and Pedro Alvarez coming along in Indy, the next moves would appear most likely to affect Eric Fryer and Chase d'Arnaud when Pedro and Doumit are brought back to Pittsburgh.

That would be one more than Cedeno!
These two wont save the team but they do improve it!

Can Pearce's new nickname be "Savior" ?
Or would that be unpalatable to the more religious members of BD?
Oh man, so many insulting jokes to make. So much fun.

Steve Pearce takes both pills
by crushing them up and snorting the purple dust.
Then he hits a home run.

Yeah, at least 3 tonight.
That would match his HR output from the last two years combined …or something like that.
Interestingly enought...
d’Arunad, not Pearce, at third base tonight.

Pearce never seems to stay healthy so maybe the club is thinking to limit his exposure at anywhere other than 1B til he shows he’s definitely 100%. Just a suggestion….

Or maybe...
it’s so we actually have a decent RH bat off the bench against the lefties in the bullpen? I would expect that Pearce will start tomorrow night vs Garcia.
if he can play short at Indy
during his rehab he’s healed enough to play 3b here

We'll see...he always finds new ways to get hurt. He may have played well at AAA for a handful of games, but I think it would help his fragile body to play almost solely at first where he is comfortable.
If he doesn’t put together a strong finish to the season and stay healthy, it will be about time for him to find a new employer in ’12.

Barring other injuries in the OF, who walks the plank when Tabata finally gets back?
X Paul? Or does Overbay take a hike and Jones plays against righties at 1B?

On This Date......
in 1899, Ginger Beaumont rips six hits and scores six runs to set a major league record.
On This Date . . . .
in 2011, Steve Pearce returns to the club and rips a 5-run pinch-hit grand slam in the 11th inning.
I need a Ginger Beaumont jersey...
Too bad they didn’t wear numbers back then.

Maholm slumps over in his stall
Paul is going to need to throw a shutout tonight with a #5-#9 of Overbay, Jones, Cedeno, McKenry and himself. And D’arnaud manning the #2 spot. Let’s hope Presley, Walker and Cutch each hit 2 HRs.
Yes indeed...
and the biggest bat that we’re talking about getting is Willingham or DeJesus? I have to laugh.
Call me optimistic...
But doesn’t Jones and Ronny seem to do pretty good together in the lineup. Seems like everytime Ronny had an RBI it was Jones on base. Look for those two to contribute tonight!

It's time to bring Pedro up...
I know DK and many others are saying that we should not. Stating that we shouldn’t be bringing him up just so he would be our best option as opposed to Wood/Harrison, etc… I at first got that logic, but then it got me thinking… Why did we bring Chase up? Chase CLEARLY was not ready for the big leagues, yet we brought him up. We obviously thought he was an upgrade to be our starting shortstop over guys like Pedro Ciraco, so we brought him up. Why can’t we do the same with Pedro? I just don’t understand.
That made perfect sense...
But that is not how we do things!

Chase can afford to suck more because he may or may not be in the long-term plans for this team. Pedro, however, is THE biggest part of this team’s future not named Andrew McCutchen. We have A LOT riding on Pedro.
not as much chase can afford to suck, as it is chase can afford to ride the pine for a few weeks and see limited action
Thats what she said! - Michael Gary Scott
Yeah...
but at the same time, the Pirates legitimately don’t know if Chase is gonna be the SS of the future. If he doesn’t perform, he’ll be a lost cause. But Pedro HAS to perform, thus the reason for the patience with him.
Just checked
Pedro hasn’t performed this year and the Pirates are a small decimal point in first. I’d say the Pirates need help from anywhere they can get it no matter where it comes from. I don’t care is it comes from a first round pick or a 4th rounder or 36th rounder. I just want to see them put the system in place to maximize the output of all the players in the system so we don’t need to say that Alvarez or Taillon or Cole or d’Arnaud are the be all and end all to their success.
Chase CLEARLY was not ready for the big leagues, yet we brought him up.
In what way was this clear, exactly?
Maybe the .542 OPS
Or the 7 errors in 92 chances so far?
Don’t get me wrong, he’s had his good moments, too, but he definitely looks like he needs some more minor league seasoning to me.
I believe Vlad is speaking to Chase's performance in AAA before the call up
IIRC he was hitting very well and playing solid D at the time.
Fair enough
Hindsight’s 20/20 and there really weren’t any better options so I have no problems with him coming up and playing. I think he needs to go down and work on his game some more, though.
well
i think tabata is done for this season…is better not to push him…pearce is going to the emergency room again by next week…so i think is time to bring gorkys h. or hegues and forget about deadline trades…lets work it with what we have. HEY GUYS BY THE WAY YOU ARE FUNNY!!! YOU MAKE ME LAUGHED…
Who the FUCK is Hegues?
Thank you Ned Colletti.

Things could actualy come together
With Walker currently destroying the ball, and Andrew about to (purely a gut feel), adding a confident Pedro, Pearce, Doumit, Cedeno, is about to be a huge offensive boost. Pirates could really get on a roll here pretty soon.
On the other hand, Pedro could suck, Pearce and Doumit are likely already planning there next injuries, and Cedeno will hit .230 with no power. Oh well, that’s the life and reality of a Pirates fan, right?
AT game
I’m at the game tonight :) I’ll report in if I can. I’ve never seen a big game at PNC and I’m psyched. :)
Yinzers uber alles
Projected Lineup When Everyone is Back
Barring a trade obviously
RF: Presley/(DeJesus?)
LF Tabata
2B Walker
CF McCutchen
1B Overbay/Jones/Trade
C Doumit
3B Alvarez
SS Cedeno
Sounds like DeJesus is one of their top targets. If he can be had for cheap, then go for it i guess. Carlos Pena would look really good in that 1B spot. Overall though, the lineup is going to improve, trades or not
Well if they acquire an outfielder, it leaves one of two things that are bound to happen:
1) Tabata is gonna be out for the majority of the rest of the season and we need a filler.
2) Jones is gonna move to 1B after Overbay gets cut or Jones is about to be traded to open up right field w/ Overbay (ugh) continuing to play first.
But if we don’t make any other move before the deadline, I want us to upgrade at 1B. There’s no reason for Overbay to continue being an everyday player for us. It won’t take much to upgrade the position since Overbay’s production has been awful, and it won’t cost hardly anything. I don’t think there’s any excuse for the FO to NOT go after someone like Pena or call up Hague. If a change isn’t made at 1B before the deadline, I’m gonna go with the assumption that the FO really doesn’t care when there are other realistic options.
I guess you guys
don’t see Pearce playing first against lefties. This would make sense to me unless we make a trade for a new first baseman. What’s the point of an Overbay/Jones platoon anyway?
Just found out I'm going to the game on Sunday!
