Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

I just listened to David Todd's Neyer interview

Neyer raised a point that I believe to be relevant: The current team, the organization as a whole and the fans may be better served if the FO were to make a move meant to help the team win games this season. Neyer made his recommendation this even though he also doubts the Pirates will continue to perform as they performed in the first half. The reason: Most of the starting staff cannot be reasonably expected to perform as they had the first five months of the season. They are not that good. There is, I believe, something to be said for rewarding the team and its fans for fighting as hard and as well as they have so far. When asked, Neyer also stated that he'd trade Hanrahan for a McCutchen-like talent if some team offered that talent in a trade. A move like this would send the 'wrong' signal to the fans and the 2011 team, but it would always be the right move for an organization in the Pirates' current situation.

Sounds about right to me

Throwing in the towel on this year just because the franchise isn’t “there” yet in true talent terms would extremely short sighted.

more short sighted would be

spending the farm to get a bat. we need about 4 bats in this line up right now. i agree it sends a bad message on the surface if no trades happen. but just because a move isn’t made doesn’t mean NH didn’t try and pull the trigger on a move. So i guess i agree to a point. If nothing happens I think from a PR standpoint NH needs to come out and say “this is why we didnt make a move, this club this club and this club were asking way too much”

We have some bats

Doumit, Tabata and Alvarez are possibly just around the corner. These Ryan and Tabata have proven that they can hit. We hope that Alvarez will. They cost us nothing right now and could help a lot down the stretch. Pearce is a good right handed option. Meanwhile, We are a small ball team. Speed wins for us. (See today) Diaz is pathetic and he and Wood only slow us down. Diaz is especially weak in every aspect of the game. Pearce should be our right handed option until Tabata comes back. Presley, dArnaud and Cutch put PRESSURE on the opposition. Even Harrison and Paul make things happen when they are in the line-up.

does this sound famliar to anyone?
The Mariners’ losing streak has erased the fact that the club was in the AL West hunt just two weeks ago. GM Jack Zduriencik tells Larry Stone of the Seattle Times that he tried to find help for the Mariners’ terrible offense but to no avail. “That big bat doesn’t seem to be out there at a reasonable cost. It’s not as easy as saying, ‘We need a bat. Let’s go get a bat.’ Great. Who’s giving one up? Lots of clubs who are doing well are looking for a bat,” Zduriencik said.

However

if you trade a few guys for bats who will be ready in a few years, you won’t be in this position when some of your young pitchers are major league ready.

Yep

Building for 2013 and beyond ought to define the program of the FO. But Neyer’s point remains relevant. The FO needs to send a signal to the core and to the fans which tells both that the FO and the owners have their back.

Maholm or Correia

I think the pirates are going to sell and buy next week, Buy on the cheap, and sell high on Maholm and even Correia. I think Brad Lincoln is ready to be given a full time shot.

Correia’s ERA is already well above the NL average for a starter, and it’s climbing rapidly. The time to sell high on him passed two months ago.

Wilbur is absolutely right

I was suggesting that yesterday and then took a closer look at his regression. Much worse than I realized. Unless he has some otherworldly stretch before the end of the season, we are stuck with him through the end of his contract. Right now, especially given that the Three Stooges (Hendry, Colletti and Wade) are out of contention, getting some fool to take him is out of the question. We gambled, got a little luck, and have now run out of luck on Correia.

6 man rotation

Going to a six man rotation with either Lincoln or Ohlendorf might make sense.. especially considering right now the arms 1-5 are almost indistinguishable in terms of talent/production, and atleast a couple of them (Correia especially) would benefit from the extra time off in between starts..

I’m also under the mindset that the team NEEDS to do some kind of deal if for no other reason than to keep/.install more confidence in the team and a pitching staff who’s done all they can just to hold down the fort so to speak…

Profar + Davis yields Hanrahan

I think Texas values Profar so highly right now...

That the Bucs would have to throw in something in addition to Hanrahan if they wanted to get Profar. In which case, he’d be too expensive. Martin Perez wouldn’t be a bad get though.

by NastyNate82 on Jul 24, 2011 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I make that trade in an instant. Even from a PR standpoint, you could sell Davis to the yinzers (not that that should influence any decision) as an offense booster, while Profar would arguably be the top prospect in the system (even over Taillon and Cole).

by scully0505 on Jul 24, 2011 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly, I just think Jon Daniels is too savvy to trade a top prospect for a closer, no matter who it is.

by scully0505 on Jul 24, 2011 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...

For all of Profar’s talents, he’s still a few years away, which means a lot can happen to him (or Andrus) between then and now. And the fact they already have an SS doesn’t mean anything…you can always move a guy OFF SS to second or third. You can’t really move a guy to SS.

by NastyNate82 on Jul 24, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Andrus really doesn't have value as anything else, though.

But I would look for Daniels to sell Andrus when Profar is ready. Texas is somewhere in the middle of big market/small market mentality. They know the value of the farm but are able to extend their most valuable players. And they have quite a few of those to deal with, so they’re going to need reinforcements from the minors.

by MarkInDallas on Jul 24, 2011 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Profar is probably what…2-3 years away? Even though Andrus is a pretty good player (3.0 WAR at this point) Profar probably has a higher ceiling. I’m not sure if I follow what you mean about Andrus not having value as anything else. Do you mean that since he has no power, he is resigned to short? Either way…a great fielding SS who can steal 40 bases is valuable and probably better than about 20 other SS out there if they were to trade him.
Either way, with Profar coming and the current keystone combo of Kinsler and Andrus…thats a nice problem to have
